holding driving licences from multiple countries

    Hi Folks,

this thread i've started today in the motors section outlines my general query.

To summarise. I have found myself in a position where i have a valid UK driving licence and a valid Irish Driving licence. I outlined how this situation happened in the thread so i won't repeat here.

Post 14 in the thread by member "Alun" links to the EU directive restricting licences from multiple member states.

I am of the opinion that irish legislation must implement this Directive for it to be law. But i cannot find such legislation. I've checked road traffic acts 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006. I'm going to look at previous acts to check them.

What i'd like to know, is my assumption about the directive correct? It is not in itself a law until our legislation implements it?
If so, does anyone have any idea what else apart from road traffic acts i should be checking?

thanks for any help in this,
    SOP

Try looking at the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations 1999

I askd for an irish drivers licence and was told i had to swap my uk licence for it. I didnt do this because my uk licence is valid till my 70th birthday no need to renew it every few years

A large number of European Directives are implemented by methods other than primary legislation. Some are implemented by Statutory Instrument. The MIBI agreement implements directives by a contract between the minister and the Insurance companies.

With respect, why not just sit the test and get a licence the prescribed way?

Have you been convicted of traffic offences where the judge has unfairly taken your licence away.

Brilliant. Have you been convicted of a criminal offence where the judge has unfairly taken your liberty away? Then why not flee to St. Kitts & Nevis?

It could be the case that you don't need a test in some eu member states like it was in Ireland in the 1950s, but I would say that it is probably not legit because I've heard that it is mandatory to do lessons before you get a licence in Poland, and Poland is one of the countries listed.

In any case, why not just get a second provisional?
