Looking for a visa for Canada 2008 (not student, under 26 visa). I went to USIT but as I will be away in Asia when they give out 2008 visas they suggested going to the Embassy. Went to the embassy they said go to USIT! Anyone managed to get round this before?

I got the student one last year and technically you wouldn't need to be in the country to get one. You apply on the morning they are released on the internet, have them send out the forms to a family members address and then fill out the forms with a family member over the phone. Unlike a J1, there is no embassy interview. I think they release the visas sometime in Feb. and you need to be waiting by the internet for the minute they go online as they will be gone by the hour.

Do the visas for Canada really go that fast with J1? Im hoping to do a years work and travel in canada next year also, again, under 26. does anyone else do em besides usit?

Nope USIT cornered the market on this one which is why they charge what they like for it.

No that was just a rumour this year, they only sold out about two weeks ago (after about 8 weeks)

It was no rumour when I went last summer. You went online and depending on how quick you filled out the application you were given a number, the quicker you filled it out, the lower the number was. There was a cut off point at a certain number, e.g 1500 and anyone after 1500 was put on a waiting list. Some of my friends who applied the morning they went on sale only managed to get on the waiting list. Maybe this year USIT have been granted extra visas.

In relation to what someone said about USIT having the market to themselves, its an utter disgrace. They really do bleed you dry on costings and have terrible customer service. The plonkers even make you fly with BA which means you have to fly to Heatrow first, a pain in the ass on the way home when you feel decrepit. This year I am going to New York on a J! and vowed I would never give my custom to USIT again. I have taken the commando option with Sayit which allows me to book my own flights and insurance. The less money these so called 'student' travel companies get off me the better.

Thats so annoying. I was really hoping not to use USIT at all due to my previous experiences with them. I cant understand why they just didnt tell me that instead of shipping me off to the embassy. Is the demand for the under 26 visa as high as the student visa?

I got mine the day they went on release if you want to call it that and it was a student one because I was in my last year. Those ones went fairly fast but my friend is here on an under 35 and they didn't go nearly as fast. If you can just get online on the day it'll be fine its quick and easy to apply for it.
