CO2 based motor tax in 2008, Reality or fiction?

I’m interested in buying a BMW 330d for 530d or 3.0 tdi Audi in the next year or so, probably from the UK, I’ve been looking at the DOE’S website regarding the government’s decision to change from an engine based motor tax system to a CO2 based system.

Does anyone know if this is actually going to happen next year or is this electioneering propaganda? I’ve looked up the following co2 emissions website
And for the 330d its 180ish g/km, which is a lot less than some 2 litre petrol cars.

So is it worth waiting until next year before buying/importing? Because according to the DOEs website if I buy before Jan 2008 the road tax will remain 1100 Euro ish for a 2.9l engine from then on?

Sounds like an imported 330d will be worth more than an Irish pre-2008 registered 330d car! Surely this is wrong? Seems like a very uneven tax system (again!)
And what about OMSP of VRT in 2008 and onwards?, will it be based on the selling price of an 1100 motor tax car, or a CO2 based motor taxed car which has been imported after jan2008?

I suppose is all depends on how the DOE decide the tax bands

Have a look at the DOE website and some of the replies entered from the public and some organisations like the AA, Green party, SIMI etc. makes for interesting reading.

Being cynical, I have my doubts if motor tax will come down for anyone.

I would say that the car tax will be based on the CO and other gases that cars produce. But as Maidhc says, tax will not come down.

I agree. You will typically find in these request for propsals that there's a stipulation that "any proposal must cause no financial loss to the exchequer" or something like that.

If we all in the morning went out to buy Hybrid vechiles and the VRT bill dropped by €500m. Rest assured the Environment / Green / Registration tax for hybrids would rise to recoup the €500m (along with other tax bands to ensure that Hybrids are still the cheaper option)

Funny but people keep forgetting that we ALREADY pay an emmissions tax. There is huge tax on fuel and the more you burn the more tax you pay.

I think that they plan to introduce some sort of CO2 based tax next year but it'll accompany the current engine cc based one aswell. Also they were mentioning somewhere that it'll be for new cars in 2008 onwards, and won't change anything pre-08, imported or not.
