Taking pics in the city - Problems?

I just wanted to ask this as I'd be a bit wary taking my camera into the city centre..

Has anyone here ever had any trouble / received any aggro / been mugged while taking photos in the city? Might seem like a bit of a weird question, but it's an issue that has so far prevented me from heading in and taking a few snaps.

Never any problems here, but then mine's not worth stealing :) I know what you mean though.

So far none, but then again I have avoided "dodgy" areas. I do intend doing alot more shots around the city, I love taking street scenes. I suppose the main thing to do is look confident or go along with a couple of friends if you are worried about any issues.

i often shoot in the city centre, carry thousands and euros in my bag, never had a problem thankfully. don't normally shoot alone, normally with a group of people though who i'm photographing

Never had a problem, and usually go shooting on my own.

never had a problem either and I usually go alone too. If I ever got any hassle though, I'd give up my equipment without any hesitation. After all, it's only gear, which is replaceable. Life isn't.
That sounds very melodramatic, but the other night, not 100 yards from my house, two 19 year olds got into a fight. An onlooker ran into his house and brought out a knife, gave it to one of the lads. One of them is now dead, and the other two are on charges of serious assault. Three families lives ruined.

Back on topic...Bottom line - don't ever put yourself in danger for the sake of a camera...

Cheers for the replies! Guess it doesn't sound as bad as I thought!
Hopefully I'll venture in soon :D

Just don't look like a bloody tourist. Don't walk around gawking at everything with your camera out going snap snap. Carry it discretely and no one will even notice you have one.

Well, depends on if you have the sigma lens from the other thread or not.

I've been hassled once. Just the once. Down by James' Gate. Admittedly it was by a ten year old scanger, but the type you have to keep watching out the side of youe eye. And you're always wary that he'll have his big brother and all the big brothers mates just around the corner. I guess you just have to be always 'switched on'. Just in case...

If you're shooting at night, definitely take along a friend.
In the daytime it's usually fine in the city centre, just avoid dodgy looking people.
