    Hi all

I am looking to keep some films and film clips on my hard drive (and possible recovnert them to DVDs at a later stage). Which is the best format to save them in .MPG or .AVI? Is there any major difference - they both seem to create a similar sized file

    Cheers

That's because .MPG and .AVI are just containers and whatever you are using for the conversion is encoding the same type of video into each container.

The settings you choose will affect the quality of a resulting DVD in the future.

AVI can contain Lossless quality but then the file is huge. Look at compression to MPEG2 which will be DVD quality in a smaller file. Bitrates, dimensions and ratio are important factors too.

Thanks - I am using DVDSanta to convert the files back to DVD format. Unfortunately it seems that DVD Santa has problems reconverting MPEG2. It only seems to like MPEG and AVI
