Bought a guitar online from Ishibashi lately. The axe is over the 650Euro limit that can be processed at the Laois office. They are looking for a SAD (single administrative document) to be completed at any custom house or customs clearance agency. They say they'll hold the guitar for 2 weeks until they receive this completed form.
Anyone any experience on this one?...
Do i have to go myself or can a friend do it?...working mad unsociable hours at the mo !

Thats happened to me a couple of years ago, i don't know about the E650 limit though, the only time it happened to me was when it was over 2 grand or something.. ive brought in lots between E1000 and E1500 and just paid the normal way. I think they do it when they think you are a reseller or something.

I remember when it happened I spent ages googling it and trying to find out what the craic was. I might even have posted about it here.

The upshot was you CAN do it yourself, but you need to go in to get the forms and file it. Like yourself, there wasnt a chance of me getting in during the week, so I just paid some crowd 50euro to do it for me by fax. It was sorted within a few hours and i had the guitar the next day. Was really pissed off at the time:D

Cheers Voodoo...sorry what i meant was can someone else go in and file it on my behalf?...

Ah yeah, it doesnt have to be you personally at all.

And what's the craic?...you pay the customs money there and then ...at the clearnace agency?

A clearance agency is a company who prepare the forms for you. Youll pay them the customs charges plus their fee.

Sorted...fax'd the invoice and letter i received from Laois to the agent. Have to send him a cheque, when he recieves it he'll fax on the SAD to Laois....ahhh the hassle. Looks like he's charged around 40 Euro as his fee.
Should be getting the guitar on Tuesday :)))))

You may even have it before the end of the week. If i remember right, as soon as your man got his check, he faxed in the paperwork, and customs actually released the parcel to an post the same day.

Anyway, good stuffs:D make sure to post plenty of pics of whatever it is

Sorry if resurrecting an old thread annoys anyone, but I have a near identical question:  I bought a guitar from Ishibashi in Japan, which is now sitting in Customs in Portlaoise. I also got a letter from them saying it is over the 650 Euro limit and I need to complete a SAD (single administrative document).

I see both of you used a clearance agency, but does anyone have an idea of where I'd get a SAD form without using an agency? If not, can anyone recommend a clearance agency?

    Cheers.

I'd suggest just ringing them to get the best and most accurate info.

I should still have the number of the clearance agent that I used. PM me if you need the contact info. THough if you ring them, they'll probably give you the same guys number anyway.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll give customs a call in the morning and see what they say. If I don't have any joy, I'll PM you. Cheers!

If I don't have any joy, I'll PM you.

Just for info: it appears that even if you can get your hands on a SAD, it'd be nigh impossible to fill it out yourself.

Part of the problem is that you have to know exactly how the parcel got into the country. As all An Post parcels go through Portlaoise, it's not clear if they flew in, arrived in another EU country and were ferried over... and so forth.

I spoke to a couple of clearance agents before finding one that's use to dealing with Portlaoise Customs. It seems like there's a small number of companies that are familiar with it. It's not free either!

Thanks voodoo_child for the earlier response. BTW, if the rumours are correct, the guitar I'm getting was built in the same factory where the Caparison bodies and necks are made (they're finished elsewhere), even though it's not a Caparison... :)

I presume it's a Jackson Stars or custom BC Rich if it's coming from the Chushin-Gakki plant, but whatever it is, don't forget to post pics when you get it

Well deduced! I picked it up from Portlaoise yesterday rather than wait for An Post to deliver it. Thanks for responding yesterday. It helped to remove some of my confusion. A couple of pics is your reward: :)

That'd be a good trick, given I custom ordered it! :D

Ah, there was an almost identical one in the U-Box for some time. My mistake.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

Well I think a lot of the wacky stuff on the Ubox is custom orders that didnt sell or somebody sold on.
