hey, first time poster long time reader.

ok, i look in here every now and then, but i know nothing about markets or investments, and i ddont pretend to.

what i do want however is someone to take on the role of moderator in here to help keep the spam off and the noise to signal ratio high.

id like nominations form people on who they feel should be moderator, and why.
you can nominate yourself if you want. i dont think this is going to be a hugely difficult forum.

so if we can get some nominations going, id like to be able to go back to the admins with some solutions, rather than just exposing problems.

    cheers

I read through this forum regularly and would be interested ideally in co-modding it with someone if that's possible.

thanks ibid. i will give it a few days and see what happens. im sure most of the posters are busy watching rueters for their share prices.

I'll nominate myself. Long time poster, on frequently throughout the day so can clean any spam out. GO ME. :) Wouldn't mind being made mod of Basketball & accountancy while you're but don't want to push it now do I ;)

i'd like to learn more about this basketball and accountancy forum :)

is it the art of bouncing cheques?

    boom boom!

I would be disappointed if this board went the same way as askaboutmoney.com though. The atmosphere is over there is like a prison camp, i mean posters aren't even allowed to mention any stocks or shares by name!

BTW, no problem with Ibid or Kenny 5 as mods.

That's just stupid! The only rule that I think we'd need is no financial advice, ala Legal Discussion. This is a distinctly different thing to "Well, I'd put my money in x." A couple of threads we've already seen could have got Boards in trouble.

I'd be interested too, I have some experience working for an Investment Bank and have a good general knowledge of markets and products.

I agree with Ibid that stock names shouldn't be banned, but would definitely keep control over any 'advice' being given.

Who would want to do that!

So if you have a bit of knowledge/experience, it might be dangerous to share? Whats going on here - need only right wingers apply??

Whats wrong with sharing opinions and since when is discussing opinions the same as offering advice? And who decides whats advice and whats opinion ? and what will the criteria be. Big M or small m??

Whats the point if some control freak is out of depth of knowledge- go straight to code red. Bit of a joke really and wonder what's the point, unless th eunderlying weakness here is nothing more than hackling over financial ad speak, interest rates and no more!!

So its relevance does not extend beyond the less aware or the poor sighted who not see or cannot read prevailing rates and conditions. A sort of Bingo game with no numbers!!

Why not open a forum for far-rightminded people where names and nouns are banned.

It's not. But quite a few people have come on here and said "I've x to invest, any advice?" as distinct to "I've got x to invest, any opinions?" or "I've got x to invest, what would you do?" It's a small difference, but a technical one. "Opinions?" is effectively the same thing as "advice?" but clears Boards in the case of financial disaster.
And who decides whats advice and whats opinion ?
    A court.
and what will the criteria be. Big M or small m??
See above. Basically once the word "advice" isn't used we're grand. (That definition is not quite rigourous enough, but that's the jist of it.)

So if you have a bit of knowledge/experience, it might be dangerous to share?

Yes it might, maybe not for you but possibly for the other person if it is construed as advice rather than opinion.
    Whats wrong with sharing opinions

    Nothing.
and since when is discussing opinions the same as offering advice?

It's not. But it can be confused as that if it isn't clearly an opinion.

Why not open a forum for far-rightminded people where names and nouns are banned.

Interesting idea, want to write the proposal. I wouldn't like to see any banning of stock names etc, but I do feel it's important that people realise that if they need financial advice they should seek it from a professional at a financial institution whereas if all they seek is an opinion then getting it here is a good place to start.

ok, just to clear some things up....

im glad there has been a bit of discussion and debate going on. thats good.

first up, kenny 5, i dont moderate this forum, i look after the catagory, so im in charge of everything :)

but i know nothing about this forum, and i want someone to look after things in here that is interested, and has some knowledge.

the role is not about being a strict right wing hitler. let me get that out of the way. its about making sure the forum runs sooth. if that means you dont have to post on it for 6 months, im not worried.
its not about pressing personal opinions on others, making up stupid rules, or abusing people.

i can see the point about the 'advice'. straight up, we do not want boards.ie to be liable for any 'advice' that went pear shaped.
i also dont see why stocks cant be named.

but as long as there is no insider trading, and that everyone understand that information can be freely shared and given, that none of it is advice that will have have a definite outcome.

    is that understood?

it will be inthe charter that whatever you take from this forum, the advice is personal opinion only, and that you take your own risks when you speculate.

and if there a problem, well you can always report posts and threads, and i will repsond. im not above removing and banning moderators form the fora they moderate.
a moderator is there to make sure the forum runs smoothly. im hoping the worst job for the week is removing 'buy property in south america' posts :)

i'll make a decision later today, so if anyone has any other concerns, or wants to put forward their name, or back someone else, id still appreciate the input.

but i do like the idea.

Sir yes sir!!! :) I was only joking anyway dude.

I agree that the names of the shares should still be allowed to mention. ie. I bought x amount of Y ltd and it's gone up or down over a period of time.....and if you want to express an opinion as to why then feel free.........but coming on and saying BUY BUY BUY of Z Ltd I think is a little much and may deserve a slap on the bottom or wrist, whichever they want.

Would not mind doing the Mod thing, although I see I'm throwing my name into the frame a bit late in the day.

Damn taking Paddy's week off as holidays.

I'd say xebec and Ibid would make a fine choice. I don't know Kenny 5, but I assume he's on the level :)

Yeah, xebec and ibid for mod!

Don't know Kenny 5 either but presume he's alright!

I would back Ibid for moderator.

    apologies for delay.

i have added Ibid and xebec as moderators to the forum.

please allow them some settling in time. if anyone is unhappy, you can drop me a pm.

if anyone has any suggestions or opinions, please start a new thread where they can be kept, and the new mods can start to make changes if necessary, or leave the forum as its stands if that is the will of the people.
