Voiding my warranty?

I was just wondering, since the PS3 boasts an upgradeable HDD, if I were to remove the standard 60GB drive and put in say, my own 320GB 2.5" HDD, would that void my warranty?I hope not, because I just got a great deal for a 320GB HDD that I was planning on using in my PS3.Anyone have any info on this?

Surely every PS3 would come with a warranty card with this info on it.

Doesn't void your warranty.................BUT, make a balls of it, and its all down to you...:p

Haven't got around to trying it out as I haven't had the time, but its definitely a positive move from Sony and one of the few things you (and any Sony haters out there) would have to give them credit for..

Wasn't aware you could do that with the ps3. Pretty handy feature.

I'm not a Sony hater, I seem to be perceived as quite the opposite as of late.
I won't worry about making a balls of it, I build and repair PC's and Laptops for a living so this shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the info, very much appreciated.

Wow thats fairly cool , it uses a standard HDD?? IS there a cap on the size you can use?? Do you need to load an OS onto then?

It needs to be freshly formatted, and It has to be a 2.5" drive(Laptop HDD)
I'm not sure yet if it's SATA or a standard IDE drive, I'd assume it's a SATA as it's a brand new machine.
And an OS doesn't need to be installed.

But one can be installed? Im talking about a PS3 OS here, not linux or something.

Also on the last line of the main body of text it says "services will not be provided on any non ps3 harddisks". does that mean the ps3 interface will not work?? What does it mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Well, the PS3 OS itself, and anything the PS3 needs to operate, is installed on separate flash memory, not on the HDD, so you won't have to worry about losing anything you need to run your PS3, although the text you mentioned worries me, and I don't really understand it.Maybe someone else can shed some light?

    EDIT

Would that not mean that Sony will not perform any repairs or maintenance on any HDD other than the one that came with your PS3?That's all I can think of that makes any sense.

Didn't mean "you" AC Jones.......I was just generalising, although I can see it looks like I worded it that way..
Yes it is a very handy feature, and a lot of people over in the likes of www.avsforum.com have upgraded to the likes of the 120gb Samsungs..

Like I said, I haven't got around to it myself...partly for time reasons and I've still got around 20gb free on my original one. One thing I think I remember reading about is to make sure you use a 5400rpm HDD like the Samsung, and not one of the newer 7200rpm 2.5 HDD...............you'll introduce far too much heat into an already "warm" machine with a higher rate drive..

That's sweet then, the 320GB HDD I got runs at 5400rpm.
If you do get around to it let me know how you get on, and also if you wouldn't mind, let me know if it's SATA or just ATA.

Where did you get a 320gb laptop drive?

    .

    I'm (fairly) sure it's SATA.

My thoughts exactly. Biggest I have come across is 160Gb.

Would you care to enlighten us AceCardJones? Or you can tell me launch night, if you decide to head for GAME Dawson Street. ;)

By the way - just found this.

A 20 GB / 60 GB 2.5″ SATA150 Hard Disk Drive is pre-installed and coupled with Linux. In the 60GB configuration, Flash Memory can also be used — either Memory Stick, CompactFlash, or SD/MMC. For communication, the PS3 will have one Gigabit ethernet port, four USB 2.0 ports, and will support Bluetooth 2.0 EDR.

Shamelessly pulled from another forum ..... :o
Yes you can. The only tool you will need is a cross-head screwdriver and this clip shows how easy it is:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=o4GbkVJI9m4

What type of drive should I get?

    Look for the following:

    - 2.5inch drive
    - Serial ATA-150 interface
    - 5400 RPM spindle speed (you can go for a faster drive but this will make your PS3 warmer and possibly noisier!)

Video doesn't show em' turning it on, but from what I gather, the system just performs a initial format with the base PS3 OS (similar to what happens if you perform a full format within the XMB).......so a certain amount is allocated to the system, remainder is free for use..

The warranty is not voided, but obviously Sony don't want to know about your third-party HDD or any damage you done not following the guide..
I feel the heat issue is a big thing, as the PS3 can get hot (from the bottom and right-side exhaust) and introducing a 7200rpm drive could de-stabilise the system..
People who have done haven't really seen a speed increase or anything like that, just a capacity jump (which is what you want anyway), so they do recommend something like the 160gb Samsung Spinpoints (as its nice and quiet - not that the 60gb is noisey or anything like that)

Yeah my mistake, The 320GB one is a 3.5", the 2.5" one was only 160GB.
Sorry about that, don't know where I was going with that.
