    Got a new VFR in February and the insurance renewal came through the door this morning - just over 2k for Fully Comp.

    Not too bothered about the price because I've only had a Yamaha SR and a restricted Bandit 6 before that - so its my first "powerful" bike.

    Gave Carole Nash a bell and they quoted me 4k+ for fully comp. So I got to wondering about the differences in the quote. So out of interest....

    In the UK, but might be useful for comparision for rip off Ireland purposes.

    I rode a ZZR600 prior to this as my first bike but only since November so no discount for that, obviously.

    No it doesn't actually!

    that is 750 is pounds, which equates to what; €1100 ish? and he is 34 not 28, and the vfr is more desirable than a GS.


    OP, did you try AON, or Quinn Direct?

    AON will give you a discount if you do their Rider Training programme.

    The original quote is through AON - I wasn't aware that Quinn insure bikes will give them a bell now.

    The AON training/assessment is on my list - unfortunately there are a few other bits and pieces on that list too that are all equally as pressing so quite when it will happen is anybody's guess.

    Rest assured that when the time comes I will be back here looking for names of instructors. I did a one day course through Hibernian with Ray Murray a couple of years ago and thought he was excellent - not sure who else there is or how expensive it is though.

    Stop trying to make it sound like Ireland is not a rip off country. It is! If I ring my insurance company in France to insure my Bandit they quote me €600 EUR fully comp. Here I'm charged €1300 TPO.

    €1,095.67 EUR exactly. Still cheaper by over €900 EUR.

    Anyway it is a much much larger insurance and bike market over there - and France too.
    Minimal difference. They're both over 25 and not in their 60s yet...
    30 years old is the a major hurdle.

    Insurance for me at 29 is €500 more than me at 30. - that is a 33% saving.
    And the R1200GS is more expensive than the VFR by around €4,000 EUR!

    Cost price/ market value has very little impact on the insurance quote as does likelihood of it being stolen. A VFR is a sports tourer, a GS is a big trailie.

    Look, I'm not here to argue with you about rip off insurance companies. if you can get such a cheap quote abroad, why don't you do just that? I am simply comparing Like with Like as best I can.

    Personally, I think €2000 is quite expensive for insurance, as I am the same age as the OP, and pay half that Fully Comp on my bike. I do have the RoSPA discount too though.

    Meaning there could potentially be more claims as more motorbikes are insured in these countries. Is your logic "the more bikes insured the cheaper the insurance is"? This doesn't make sense to me.

    That's why I struggled to understand why you pointed out "the vfr is more desirable than a GS" in your earlier post.

    It's illegal. Only reason really... But quite an important one IMO.

    Fully agree with you there. I would advise ringing all insurance companies/brokers (CN, AON and QuinnDirect) and playing all 3 off eachother. Should be able to save a bundle!

    Bottom line is that you get shafted for bike insurance in ireland. Just a bit of internet research other countries that quote online will tell you that it's as high (for me anyway) as 25 times more expensive here (german quote). 10 times more than in england (for me again)

    If driving under foreign insurance is illegal does that mean that riders with yellow plates are not insured? There are a few UK reg bikes here and they have been around for years.

    Depends where the rider resides and works. If he/she resides or works in the Republic of Ireland, insurance si void.

    However, I did find one insurance company that would insure me even if I lived and worked in Ireland as long as my bike was registered in France (i.e French plate). So that would be legal insurance-wise.

    However, I think if I went ahead and did this the Irish Government (and An Garda Siochana) would pull a law I'm not aware of out of their hoop to make it illegal on this side of the Irish Sea... So I pay extra to get insured here as a result...

    Doesn't AXA take bikes they tax scooters anyway when Hibernian pulled out and got a letter saying some Broker now looking after insurance I rang them got a quote of around €270 3rd party asked which insurance company they were dealing with was told Axa.
    So rang AXA direct as I had my car insured with them- they charged me €130 less then half what the Brokers quoted!!

    If you're resident in Ireland it is illegal for you to drive a non-Irish-registered vehicle, whether owned by you or not.

    In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

    When I tried AON, they told me that the Valk is Insurance Group 9 and the Magna is Insurance Group 10; and quoted me €1,100 (TPO) for the privilege!!! The answer is to shop around.

    Cover TPFT & some extras that I don't want
    In the UK when I lived there it was £170, move back to Ireland it becomes €440. Hmmmm!

    I can understand the high cost of Comprehensive insurance but for TP it should be shedloads cheaper. I don't want Fire, Theft, Breakdown cover, Flatulence protection etc. all I want is the bare arse minimum to have me covered in the event of my causing an accident.

    Oi, Chippy01, my da had the same 2 bikes as you over the last few years! New pipes on the magna gives it a lovely note. The F6 could do with a reverse though!

    I drilled the backplates of the exhausts on my Magna. Six 8mm holes in each. Has a lovely note to it now.
    As for the Valk, I installed 6into6 slash pipes. That beast now roars.
    From what I know, almost all Valks were made in America. Tank badge says VALKYRIE. Some models were made for export, and the tank badge was changed to F6C. (Something about upsetting the Germans) A few very rare models were actually made in Japan, and these Japanese models had reverse fitted. Go figure.
