I have an 80GB hard drive that im trying to sell and I decided tonight I would format it!

Ive sold most of the other parts from the pc and im on a crap pentium 3 with 25mb of ram now..

set the jumers to slave popped into the pc it came up in windows that I could format it but it only had 31.4GB of space on it?

Anyways I tried to format it that way using using the NTFS way and it got to the end and failed so I formatted it with the FAT32 way.. thats worked and it has been formatted but its on 31.4GB...?

As far as im aware I didnt change any volumes to it to make it that size!

Any help would be great thanks!

Did you format it from XP? If yes, you've run into Microsoft's strategic decision to limit XP's FAT32 formatting to 32GB only. Format again using a 98 boot floppy or Linux.

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/choosing_between_ntfs_fat_and_fat32.mspx?mfr=true

    FAT32
    • Volumes from 512 MB to 2 TB.
    • In Windows XP, you can format a FAT32 volume up to 32 GB only.

If the drive failed to complete a straight forward format under NTFS I would be concerned about it's reliability.

Download the diagnostic tools from the manufacturers website and give it a run through with the software to make sure the drive is okay.

The drive is about 4 years old now and I never had problems this was my 1st time formatting through windows aswell! I think I might try later on is put the XP cd in and boot from that and format it to install windows!
