Problems with people on boards not understanding the poker forum

I was just reading this thread

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055065342

and I was reminded of a few similar posts a while back by people saying they never venture onto the poker forum due to not understanding the jargon used. Now obviously anyone who doesn't understand the jargon doesn't browse any other poker forums, and indeed almost certainly doesnt play the game seriously so probably will struggle to contribute much in the way of hand analysis. However in the interest's of improving access to the forum for people who would simply like to casually browse would it be worth putting up a sticky with a list of the common abbreviations used here.

I have googled around in order find a simple one to copy (with the 30 or so most used ones) that would be easy and quick to read. something like

UTG = under the gun - first to act after the big blind has been posted
    MP = middle position
Limp = call the big blind
CR = Check Raise - to check, allowing an opponent to bet and then raising his bet
    Hero = ....

    etc etc

    Does anyone have anything suitable?

Not really a request for another section, more of one querying other peoples thoughts/feelings on whether another should be moved.

More of a (probably ignorant) rambling this, and probably not in the right section either. Out of the last few "new posts" I have checked, most of them are for the poker section.

Now, I like a game of poker every so often, nothing against it whatsoever. But these threads that are raised are often full of pokery jargon that I cba (see I can do it too) to understand thus, these threads may as well be in Chinese or something as I do not understand them.

I can't actually imagine one of these threads being discussed IRL (another one there) with the people actually keeping a straight face and not bursting out laughing at the jargon used. I have included an example below:

    Quote:

    "I've 9k, villain 16+k

    blinds 75/150

he limps utg+1, not 100% whether he open limped or not.

I make it 500 to go with AdQh in mp.

    He's the only caller.

    Flop:

    7d5c4d

    He checks, I bet 700.

    He c/r to 5k."

Wtf? I would have a better chance understanding hyroglyphics or something.

Those of you who can actually understand these threads are probably about to hop on your keyboards and go for a right auld dance, fair enough knock yourself out. I just think that the poker section has overgrown boards and should be hosted elsewhere or like not appear in the new posts section or something lol.

lol! when I was finished writing that I thought, hmmm, that's everything included nice and clear.

No. its only the 5th most posted forum.

Sound like a challenge to me.

You would want to be a donk to make that call

Oh donk may be more jargon
    Donk = phantom_lord

RRAI - Re-raise all in, even rarer than a CRAI.
Limp - To flat call the Big blind amount pre flop
FE - Folding equity - the chances of an opponent folding to you bet.
Slowroll - to let an opponent think he has won a hand and then creuly show him he is beaten

    FO - FReezeout
    DC - DOuble chance

TLS - Tourament Life Syndrome - a fear of putting tourament on the line at early stages, resulting in not making hands were you have and slight edge or pot odds to call as you would be knock-out/crippled

Crippled - shortstacked to a level were your chance of winning is unlikely
Shortstacked - the amount of chips you have is far below the average
MUTBD - Monsters under the bed syndrome - playing your very strong hands weaker than you should as they are not the best possible

the nuts - the best possible hands
M ratio - (M followed by a number), the ratio of your stack to the total of the blinds and antes for the current level
Q ratio - (Q followed by a number), the ratio of your stack to the average stack

so the M is basically the amount of rounds of the table you should get?

it's a phase orginating from the depths of the bbv forum on 2+2, combining the words donkey and tournaments to make fun of the poor skill level of some tournament players......

plus barry greenstein promised to say it on hsp if the guys from 2+2 raised 10k for his charity.

Its a joke insuting tournament players for playing a silly game without much skill. Every time a tournament bad beat was posted in the bad beat forum everyone would reply with the line "lol donkaments". this then grew a life of its own with people posting "lolxxxxaments" at every opportunity. There was some really funny ones, but it grew stale pretty quickly. It was almost forgotten about until recently, after the BBV forum on 2+2 paid Barry Greenstein (well his fav charity) over 30k to say it on HSP

For anyone with a couple of days off (literally, the second one is huge) that wants to read the BBV threads about "lol donkaments"

Here's the original thread where it all began

And here's the main thread where they beat their $10k target and got it to over $35k

The Peanuts -> This is when you think you have the nuts but suddenly realise after you've pushed all in that you don't, so you wet yourself in shock.

The Cashew nuts -> This is when you have the nuts in a cash game.

Suck out -> This is when a donk player (also know as a nutjob) contrives to get his chips in way behind but hits his runner runner to nullify your peanuts.

A Rock -> A player who will only play if he has the nuts, this guy will NEVER mistake the peanuts for the nuts and generally has audio books in his ipod so he has something to occupy his time whilst he waits for AA. Fold to any raise.

A Flish -> These are players from a certain point on the compass (not west) who will break your heart as they defy logic
and the laws of probability. If you have the patience to play with them you could end up owning a restaurant.

Nah, if you post anything clever in reply to HJ, he just responds with a picture of an animal :)

I don't particularly agree with the snobbish attitude towards tourneys. Its like saying that pool has no skill compared to snooker, or tabletennis no skill compared to tennis.
Its a different skill set, but the rewards are still good.

tbh with the amount of posts people have here id guess that you all can type relitivly fast, why not just post what you want in full, takes a split second more

"I've nine thousand in chips no money value, my opponent has sixteen thousand in value of chips (at least)

the blinds (compulsory bets) are currently standing at seventy-five for the small blind(left of the dealer)/and one hundred and fifty for the big blind (thats the seat right of the small blind - who is paying seventy-five)

my opponent enters into the hand from the position second to asct preflop called under the gun plus one, although not 100% whether he open limped or not.

I make it 500 to go with the Ace of Diamonds and the Queen of hearts in middle position about 3 seats left of the button.

The is only one opponent to call my raise.

The Flop (first 3 community cards):

seven of diamonds, five of clubs, four of diamonds

My opponent checks, I bet seven hundred in chip value.

my opponent after first checking decides to raise my 700 another four thousand three hundred to seven hundred in total"

I was just explaining the context, I think tournaments are great. What better mechanism is there to give large amounts of money to donks to lose in cash games!

Ah dont bite HJ's bait for God's sake lol...

Tournaments have higher variance but greater rewards. Twice in the last 12 months I've won 7k+ in tournaments and never won 7k in cash games... (I'm talking live here, and at my stakes. If you play 400/800 and win 100k a night... good for you). The number of nights I'm down in a cash game is tiny compared to the number of nights I walk from a tournie shaking my head. The time invested in Tournies can be problematic and IS for a professional because they need to be more assured of an income and with smaller and more infrequent osscillations.

In the end of the day, its all poker. There may be other differences between tournies and cash (I'm sure there are in fact, I only gave this 5 mins of thinking) but a large part of the "lol donkaments" is just good old fashioned sneering by one group at another for no good reason. [1]

    DeV.
[1] In fact is reminds me of when I was running Gaelcon and a warhammer figures collector was over heard sneering "f*ckin Magic collectors....pfffffff *nerds*" :)

I dont think its really debateable really, it just comes down to the blinds. Any game where you have an average of 30 or less blinds can never be as skillfull an endeavour as one in which you have 100 or more.

The most skillfull streets in hold em are the turn and river. This is where excellent players can most use their advantage, because firstly they have quite lot of information so they can narrow their opponents range, secondly the bets are bigger and so more important, and thirdly the extra cards makes peoples possible holdings wider.

So any game where if you play a hand you tend to be all in on the flop or preflop is just never going to be on a level with 100+bb cash games. Obviously a deep stacked tournament with long levels is actually closer to a cash game than most tournaments.

the blinds (compulsory bets) are currently standing at seventy-five for the small blind(left of the dealer)/and one hundred and fifty for the big blind (thats the seat right of the small blind - who is paying seventy-five)

so if the little blind is on the dealer's left and the big one is on the little guys right, the question is - is the big bind related to the dealer and if not, is his wife concerned about this sort of carry on? ;)
