Hard drive fragmentation? Try extracting from one physical drive to another physical drive.

do other zipping programs behave similarly? (i.e. is it a system or software problem). www.izarc.org is freeware and supports rar and other zipping formats.

    Try clearing out

    c:\windows\temp and
    c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp

    try

    7zip

    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z442.exe?download

see if that makes things faster?
