    Helpful guy here...

Anyway, my girlfiend is having the same problem - worked at first, but then stopped a few months later. The problem it's giving is the ports have been blocked, which would be plausible only for mine (as I remember) gets access from halls just fine. If you have any firewall software I'd at least disable that just to see, and remember - Mcaffee is the devil.

Don't disable McAfee! You need antivirus if you're on the web. Apparently on average it takes 5 seconds for an unprotected machine to be attacked from the time it logs onto the web, this doesn't mean that yours is infected but turn the AV back on!

It's happening to me and it's SO frustrating. The webmessenger is absolutely balls and it keeps d/cing me.
I've tried all the proxy addresses I know from TCD.
I just want it to connect damnit.
Cianclarke - what proxy are you using?

Its not the virus's that attack you within 5 seconds, only something like maybe a worm or a direct attack will actually try break into your system. Some virus's have worm code in them(its a bit of a blurry line of what is what). But realistically a well patched system on the college network won't be compromised easily(AV has no impact on it). AV by itself can only protect you from malicious files you download, get in emails and find in cd's/usb pen drives and so on....

i think the best solution to the auld 'msn in college' conundrum is use of netsoc jabber account.

you get a netsoc account (1 euro, see http://www.netsoc.tcd.ie/Netsoc/join.php

you request a jabber account, you download a jabber client and you connect to msn/aol/yahoo/googletalk or whatever through it.

I think the ports were changed about 2 months ago, We all got an email about it.

    Go here for the config

No it's still saying the service is temporarily unavailable.. like it has been since Christmas. I'm aware it might be a Microsoft thing, but seeing as there's more people than me affected, it's gotta be something up with ISS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Its down, I emailed ISS, they think its client side, it's not. If you could email them, it might start to bring them to realise its server side.

There has been issues with MSN lately, lots of people on the mac forum complaining that they can't log in.

ISS has changed some **** - for instance, they have now blocked what I do believe is their first website. http://www.http-tunnel.com - and seem to have closed off ports and are filtering stuff going through 8002 on the proxies.

Ross, you sit on that committee, fix it :D

Wow, what was is that website Crash? I'm surprised because it's their policy not to block any websites. If they're starting to bring in banning, bebo should be next on the list imo!

    Yes Ross, fix it!

Its the website of a program used normally to circumvent proxies by running a local sock5 proxy, sending info out through whatever is specified as the http port, in this case 8002, and out to their servers. quite a handy program actually. They seem to have started proper filtering because now neither msn or http tunnel work (possibly packet level? I dont know for sure - I know DCU do something along this level)

anyhow, its a pain - not sure if this has gone past any committee that has student involvement in it, but would be kinda interested to know...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 493 ✭✭King.Penguin

you can always use google talk.

I haven't noticed anything different about the proxies recently.

Think I have it figured, at least on the http-tunnel issue - what they've actually done is stopped all traffic to the specific servers relating to http-tunnel, which has affected being able to actually get to the website.

its not the website specifically they're blocking, its the traffic to those servers, to stop people using the service.

If you're so paranoid about AV software, why are you using McAfee? It's protection is rubbish, and it's a complete pain in the arse. Also, AV software wouldn't have much to do with it - I was refering to McAfee firewall.
But yeah, you might as well turn off the AV too.

Meh, Macs ftw! I don't think I'm paranoid, just more aware than some.

Pah... It was raised in ISS Committee on Thursday and seemingly they need people to report it to the helpdesk so it can be figured out. That way they can check the circumstances etc.
Contact Danger Bob or email ISS helpdesk directly (helpdesk AT tcd DOT ie) giving details.
It's very probable that the new proxy servers have fecked up everyone's access to MSN. Bottom line, if ISS don't know about it nothing will ever be done about it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

no, no your paranoid, and working from wrong information since you believe the AV has something to do with unpatched machines being compromised within minutes of being on the internet. I've used machines on the internet for years(read 10+) heavily without them getting a virus(most of my boxes have AV, but due to their memory footprint and processor consumption use not all of them do).

It seems they do know about it..

I reported it and they responded they did not offer support for MSN, in other words, **** off.

Officially they don't, but usually if you word the email nicely enough they'll try their best to help. That's my experience anyhow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

My experiences with them are quite different. Aside from them really not understanding computers any more than I do, and their inability to realise that the problem is on their end, and their need to update their settings almost daily, despite any real benefit to anyone, yeh, they're helpful enough

Yeah, I can't sign in to Windows Live Messenger or Hotmail either.

I set up a thread a few minutes ago and there are a few responses. It's weird that it shut down without warning - everything else is working fine...

Windows Live Messenger was working from my post a few ones down up until an hour or two ago.

And webmessenger is indeed taking forever to open.

    Back working for me now.

Yep it came back around 8 or 9 yesterday evening:) Probably just MSN being weird for a while. Thank God it's back, I nearly got a tan, then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 588 ✭✭✭littlehedgehog

    Gah!
Sorry for dragging this up again.
But I changed laptops, and I CANNOT for the life of me remember how I got MSN working on my last one - I've followed isservice's instructions and NADA. The service is unavailable. Like it was for for ages back around Christmas until I did.. something. There was SOMETHING I did and it made it work.. and it was really simple :(
    Any ideas?!

use one screen for all your chat programs. This definitely works in halls

I really dislike those - they slow down the internet no end, and they're the first thing to go haywire and freeze up if I start downloading something.
