Having never been to one (Skyfest and not a fireworks display), I wandered has anyone taken any shots before, any good/bad experience(s) etc.

Depending on how things go with this I might try and make it across for it, anyone recommend a good spot too??

I am planning to go to it after work and I have also being
trying to think of a good spot.

I was thinking the bridge on the east wall road?

Not mad about going down too far, dont want to increase
the chances of getting robbed any more than they already are.

No idea where to stand either, plan on being in alright, was thinking somewhere around the ulster bank building but that might just be madness. I think I'll need to bring my cattle prod to keep people away from my tripod.

There are several places to stand:

    1) East Link Bridge. Need a tripod and long lens, but you have a view right up to the custom house so you get everything from a good angle. Bit far away though
    2) John Rogerson's quay. This is one of the recommended areas on the web site, so it will probably be jammed. If you move down a bit though, past the Ferryman, the crowds will thin out a bit.
    3) Grand Canal Locks. Went here last year and you get a decent-ish view.
    4) Ocean Bar. The view would probably be obscured by the new developments, but you can console yourself by having a few drinks instead while still seeing the biggest of fireworks...

It looks like there is going to be a lot more than just fireworks this year - laser shows and illuminated shows on the water itself, so anywhere on the campshires is probably the best. Get there early to get the best spot. As for safety, it's mostly families that go to see this, so just keeping sensible should see you not being robbed...it's not the North side for God's sake :D

I'm going to try AIG House on the dockslands and see if the security guard will let me shoot from the balcony on top of the building, theres plenty of buildings around if you ask the security nicely or slip them a few quid they would allow you to photograph from the top.

interesting...what's the going rate? The top of one of those buildings would be perfect for the full show

The risk of being hit by bag snatchers and pick pockets raises hugely at these sort of events. Lots of people bumping around in poor lighting a thiefs dream. As cambo_gueno said keep sensable and keep an eye on your gear.

    Seb.

Would'nt give them more than 20euro, most will have no hassle in letting you go up. Most of them will be standing on top of the buildings anyway.

Do you think Liberty Hall would be an option

For any press out there there's a dedicated media area on the matt talbot bridge. For everyone else just try con you way in :)

If you think getting there early will get you the best spot, think again. I went there a couple of years ago and people were thick on the ground even an hour before. I thought I'd set up tripod 'n all anyway, just around the quay where Spencer dock was being developed and as it was starting the crowd was way too mental to concentrate on getting a decent shot as everyone else wanted to see it from there too.

Further away the better, I'd say.

I'll be heading in sans tripod - fireworks are fireworks... but I'll be taking the fifty in case there are any interesting sneaky people shots to be had :)

Ah an hour just wont do as the pre-show entertainment kicks off @ 6:30

You would need to be there about 5 to grab a space.

The show will be directly over the river on Custom House Quay

And best places on the southside
    - Sir john Rogerson's Quay

    And Northside
    - North Wall Quay

    Map Of The Area

Just remember go around from the back never try to get down from the centre most of the reads are blocked off from about 5 on.

So, who's heading into town for this? I've got my camera with me, I was going to head in straight after work...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Sebzy

I will be but will be setting up in the press area.

My poor planning stopped this was talking to the organisers and asked about this and was told I should of let them know in advance.

Next year will be better organised and I should have 2-3 tags.

I was quite interested in heading up to the mountains, say the Blue Light pub, and take a tripod and a scarf.
But someone was saying the fireworks have been restricted in height, and so may not be visible outside the city centre. Anyone here know anything about this?

Thats the first I've heard and I think it's false.

    - Fireworks become more dangerous the lower they get.
    - This year is much bigger than last year.
    - They were not all that high last year.

I usually go up the blue light. Its not as good a view as you'd think it would be IMHO. Although maybe this year will be better?

Would it be worth my while coming back up to Dublin on Sunday for this?

Possibly some good views from Pheonix Pk...But I'm not sure...

would you see anything from Ringsend port or Sanndymount beach , i want something not too crowded to set up tripod ... don't ask for much , just a decent view and a bit of space :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 548 ✭✭✭TJM

East link would definitely be the best option - assuming that it's not too crowded and assuming that it won't be blocked off.

I've just heard the Skyfest has been canceled! :(

There was a newsflash on TodayFM just now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Yep, they just reported it on the news on radio 1. They're saying its because of "adverse weather conditions".

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,522 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

Thats a shame, I'm no where near Dublin but I was looking forward to some great fireworks shots.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 858 ✭✭✭helios

I'll be there, so hopefully we can all meet someplace before it all starts...

    edit: wait, canceled?

The Saint Patrick's festival 'Skyfest' fireworks display in Dublin city centre tonight has been cancelled.

The organisers have said weather conditions have made it impossible to stage the event, billed as one of the biggest in Europe.

It was due to take place on the River Liffey at the Dublin Docklocks from 6.30pm today.

A spokeswoman said a one-metre swell on the water and wind gusts of up to 60km an hour mean the barges used to set up the fireworks can't be operated.
