Hazard lights that shouldn't be possible.

I own a Gilera DNA 180 and it has a rather unusual problem. Whenever I try to turn off an indicator, all 4 indicators start to flash (like hazard lights). The really weird thing, is that the Gilera DNA doesn't actually feature hazard lights.

The only way to turn off the indicators seems to be to hold the indicator switch tightly in the 'off' position for a few seconds.

The only thing that was done recently to the bike was a temporary repair to the manifold seal on the carburetor (Crazy neighbour punched a screwdriver through it), but that shouldn't affect the electrics in any way.

The bike is fitted with an alarm/immobiliser, but I can't remember the make/model. Only thing I can think of is that the alarm is gone haywire, but it seems to function fine in every other way.

Anyone else got any ideas as to what is happening?

Thanks in advance for any advice or replies.

I was actually going to ask if you had an alarm fitted to your bike and I see you do. I would point my accusating finger at the alarm personally... But I'm no mechanic/electrician so I could be very very wrong...

A lot of bike alarms have that function, emergency hazard lights - I think on mine if I hold both buttons on the fob for a few seconds it will trigger hazard warning lights (not positive, bike already had hazard warning lights). So I'd definitely point the finger at the alarm too, especially as you say there was an issue there.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try holding both keys down on the keyfob, but this started happening while I was driving through the Phoenix Park, so I'm not too hopeful...It cant hurt though!

We're not advising you to hold both keys down on the keyfob! We're just saying the problem is probably coming from the alarm as alarm usually have this optional "hazard lights" extra.

You need to bring your bike to an experienced mechanic or alarm fitter so that the wiring (and the alarm itself) can be checked.

Definitely don't hold down both buttons...

I had a problem with the alarm on my bike (lazerline) and I done just that to see if I could fix a different problem and I put it into garage mode and you need a code to get it out of that mode.

After that I couldn't start the bike so I ended up having to bypass the alarm which was connected to my cut off switch but the alarm acts up every now and again.

I couldn't get anybody (shops/mechanics) to go near my alarm to either try and fix it or strip it out.

So in summary... be careful when screwing with your alarm!

I tried holding both buttons down on the keyfob... it didn't help, but didn't cause any problems either. ( I did this before your post mjjoconnor)

Spoke with the mechanic in Bikeworld (they are more familiar with DNA 180's) and believes the problem is with the indicator relays rather than the alarm. Hopefully, that means a cheaper repair or not having to replace a broken alarm.

So, on wednesday the bike will be in the garage and hopefully it can be fixed easily.

I need a new front tyre, some clutch repairs (worn unevenly) and a new carburetor manifold (which nobody in the country had in stock!). This is gonna cost me big I think...

****! Yes, I wasn't recommending holding buttons etc just meant that some alarms have that kind of function so if the alarm is boinked, it could mean issues there too... and never mess with alarms!! - you can end up in a right mess otherwise, agree with the previous poster on that :) But, anyway, hopefully, the issue is simpler and can be fixed easily, and you were right to go to a mechanic about it.
