Best way to fix a hole in an Exhaust?

Can anybody suggest the best way of fixing a hole that I have in my exhaust without having to buy a new one?

I have a Yamaha Zeal ('95) which I bought about 4 months ago and there is a fair bit of rust on the underside of the exhaust where the hole is. The hole is about the size of a 2 cent coin.

I have seen some sites which sell an exhaust repair tape which says repairs the hole but looking to see if anybody has used this tape and is it an effective remedy.

    Cheers

Apparantly, a small piece of wire mesh and some silicon (the stuff they use on windows, or to seal the edge of bathtubs, fishtanks etc) is a good permanent fix. Never tried it myself, but I know someone who did and the repair held up fine for over 2 years.

get yourself some gun gum it comes in a tub & is designed to fix exhausts, you can get in in most motorfactors, mountjoy sell it too

It depends on how 'sound' the surrounding metal is. I would suggest you take the exhaust off and bring it to an engineering workshop and get it welded. Some car exhaust places will do this for you but you'll need to ring around (don't bother with the Fast/Quik/sh1t-fit operations as they don't usually do welded repairs) and if the pipe can be salvaged you will have a better repair than gungum which is at best a temporary repair and will fall out eventually.

Mild steel pipes on bikes will rot from the inside out and any micky mouse attempt with a welding plant will open a can of maggots. I had a 750F Suzuki with the same problem and ended up having to replace the headers with a good secondhand set. Someone who is handy with a tig/mig welder might be able to temporaly patch the problem. Tape & exhaust putty will get you out of a hole for a while.

If your removing da pipes spray loads of WD40 around the manifold studs/nuts and take it easy removing them. If they shear your big in trouble!!!

try not to ruin the gasket if you plan on reusing the same one

    Thanks all,

I used the Gum Glue and it worked a treat. Sourced it in a Motor store in Tallaght, outside the square.
