I'm having a user profile problem on a network with one server and two client PCs.

The server is running SBS 2003 and the PCs are XP. in the last couple of weeks, one of the PCs has started to create a new profile for the user spontaneously when he boots and signs on. He then ends up with new user desktop, with all his shortcuts missing, no Outlook configured etc. Of course the original profile is still there, and I can sign on as administrator and delete the new profile in 'Documents and Settings' and reboot, and everything goes back to normal for a week or so.

It's hapened a few of times in the past three weeks, and the user is becoming a bit unhappy, and I'm not based on site so they lose a day sometimes before I can get to it.

I can't find anything so far in knowlegebase of general internet searches on the subject, does anyone know why this would happen?

its not a of huge amount of info to go on so im going to have to make an educated guess here, so please dont blame me if im wrong :) its sound like there may be a problem with the computer account in active directory. ive seen similar things like this occur before. remove the computer from the domain, then make sure that the computer account has been deleted from AD. rename the computer, download and run newsid on the computer (www.sysinternals.com), then join the computer back to the domain.

    see how you go.

    Damien.

It probably dosen't make any difference, but the client PCs are running Windows 2000, not XP - my mistake.

    Are these roaming profiles?
Only time I've ever seen problems with a computer loading a profile was when the hard disk was failing and NTUser.dat was corrupt :D
Did anything come up in the Event Viewer on that PC?

No, it's not using roaming profiles. I went on site to look at it the PC seems fine, no other strange errors.

I fixed this about 11 days ago. For some unknown reason, it just created a new profile - user.domain.001 in Documents and Settings. The first time I just logged in as administrator and removed this profile, and then it reverted to the original user.domain.000, which has been working fine for about a year.

Then this morning, it did it again; it created another user.domain.001 again. Can't find any other info, and no errors to indicate why, so this time I've tried ZygOte's suggestions, and after this I then copied all the contents of the original user.domain.000 profile into the current profile folder.

It was working fine when I left it, but I'll have to see if it remains that way over the next few weeks.
