A mate will be travelling to NY in two weeks. He'll be staying a week. His passport is due to expire in June 07. He's being told that since his passport is almost expired that they won't let him into the US. Is their any truth behind this? Seems like a load of horse to me. It's either in date or it's not.

Assuming he falls under the visa waiver program, then his Passport must be valid for at least 90 days from date of entry into the USA.

Looks like it's time for him to look into getting a new one ASAP

    Thanks Buffybot,
His passport is valid for 87 days from date of entry. I hear he is getting up around now to head to the passport office to get tings sorted.
    Cheers again

The 90 day expiry date 'rule' applies for most countries. For some countries they want six months left on the passport.
It's really not worth it to chance it - he should get a new one.

On the .gov site they don't mention anothing about having to have a passport with more than 5 months on it.

In most cases, to enter the United States, you must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the date you enter. However, the United States has an agreement with some countries (including Ireland) that allows you to enter on a current passport up to the actual date of expiration. An Irish/EU passport need remain valid only for the duration of the holder's stay in the United States. However, if you are traveling visa-free on the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and your passport is valid for less than 90 days, you will generally be admitted only until the date the passport expires.
