UL at Dawn for C&C

I was out at 6 O Clock this morning trying to take pictures for a photography competition in UL, and it was one of those mornings where you realise just how much you have to learn about photography. I had the camera set at ISO 400 all day, even though I had a tripod with me, and then to add insult to injury I forgot to turn on the long exposure noise reduction on the camera! Anyway, I was just looking for any feedback peeps might have on the following photo; one of the best of a pretty pathetic bunch...

I was particularly looking for feedback on the noise thing, actually. It's ok until it's blown up, then to my eye anyway it looks a bit dodgy. As the competition is for the UL prospectus, do you think that the amount of noise in this photo would be unacceptable if a photo was being printed (I know I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here - but I don't want to be laughed out of the campus)

    Thanks a million,
    -Ponder.

give use a 100% crop of the center of the photo including some
of the river and some of the sunset. If there is much noise it should
    be visible in that.

I dont understand how this photo would be used in a UL prospectus....
This isn't anything in the photo that makes me think, "hmm yes UL..."

There might not be enough detail in the shadows for it to get a
    judges attention....?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've attached the 100% (ish) crop. I've never really entered a competition like this before, where they're looking for something in particular. I've taken loads more - I have lots of UL buildings and stuff that might be more associated with UL. I can enter 10 for each category (this one is for 'landscape') so I thought I might try a few that just show off the general nice scenery around the UL campus. Do you think this is a bad idea?

The noise isn't too bad anyway.

If you are able to enter 10 into each category then that is
a completely different story. I thought this was your only
    submission.

The foreground is a bit dark I think as you exposed for the sky.
Any brighter versions and then you could combine the 2 for the
correct result or is that against the rules ?

Given that it is rag week here I am surprised that by your subject matter. Even at midday there were females falling around with little or no clothes on  and guys falling around with little or no clothes on

nice to see you kept it clean anyway :)

Yeah - I've never taken photos at that time before, I think I was expecting some sort of magical light in which everything is perfectly exposed! Ah well, live and learn as they say. The competition is on until sometime early in April, I think. I think it's being run by the 'marketing' department of UL, whatever that is... If you're in UL you will have gotten an email about it - if you're not you're more than welcome to PM me your email address and I'll forward you the email. It didn't say anything on it about being restricted to students out there anyway.

Hehe yeah, I took a look outside the stables yesterday and some guy got up on stage and managed to lose his pants within about 20 seconds! Not sure how likely it is that pictures of that will make it into the prospectus...

Here's another couple I took at a more reasonable hour. Really finding more difficult than I thought!
