This st patricks day - do i get it off

    Hi
    I work in the retail sector - (YAY);)
    anyway my employer has told me I've to work this St patricks day because I'll be getting the bank holiday monday off??

    Can he do this? i've never worked a st paddy's day before?

    Yes he can. The bank holiday is not until the Monday, so in working terms, its just another normal day in the office I'm afraid.

    Yep. Although there's no onus on an employer to give you a Monday off in lieu of a public holiday that falls on the weekend, if you have to work on the public holiday, you're entitled to time off in lieu (even if it falls on a weekend).

    While this is true the public holiday is usually moved to the following monday if it falls on a weekend. Patricks day is saturday but the public holiday for it is on monday. The same for christmas day, stephens day and other public holidays.

    Do you normally work on a saturday? if so yo have to work it.
    If not then i don't see why you should have to work it.

    That would be normal for employers/employees who work on a Mon-Fri basis. If the employer operates on a daily basis, I think they can decide which of the days is deemed a 'holiday'. My employer is paying time+time for Saturday but not for Monday. I will be working St Patrick's Day and Monday but I will only get the extra pay for the 17th.

    i have a similar question, so i hope it's ok to post in the same thread...

    i work in retail too. we have two employees, both on 5 day weeks. Employee A works monday to friday, employee B works saturdays, but has tuesdays off. this is regular, and never changes.

    the shop is closed both saturday (patricks day) and monday 19th.

    so A gets one day off his normal week, B gets two days. A is a bit miffed at "missing out" on an extra holiday, and is asking for a day in lieu.

    my understanding is that A is getting the holiday he is entitled to on monday, and is not entitled to an extra day on top, and that it is B's good luck that paddy's day falls on saturday and he gets two days off.

    does this sound right, or do i need to give an extra day to A?
