Down and Out and About in Cape Town

    Hello,

I will shortly (beginning of April) disembark the ship I work on in Cape Town. The company will fly me back home, but I can defer my flight for a time if I like, and since I've heard such great things about the city, I'd like to take the opportunity to look around. If I can untangle the red tape.

I want to hike up the Table Mountain (cable cars are for wimps) and I'd like to know whether you need to do it as part of an organised hike, or whether you can walk out of your hotel with a bottle of water, a map, a comfortable pair of shoes and follow your own course? If both are possible, which is better? I've seen guided day trips advertised for 350 Rand (about 40 euro).

The same company offer day trip safaris as well (on the actual safari for about 3 hours), for the equiv of about 150 euro, has anybody any comments on the value of such a safari, given I won't be travelling out of the Cape area, or staying in SA for more than about a week.

In addition, I'd like to visit Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned, has anybody done this? Comments?

Finally, if there was the chance nearby, I'd like to sample some local wines. Is this a viable day trip? Or is the wine area too far away?

    Thanks for any info.

Table mountain is very accesible .. any way really would suit.

Robben Island is a fantastic trip, there is only one tour operator who do trips .. book in advance. It is at least a half day trip. The guides on the island are usually exprisioners and give a great personal insite to the island the whole political climate of the time.

For wine tasting .. stellenbosh isn't too far to travel .... it's a beautiful little town with a massive selection of winerys, brandy distilleries to choose from.
