What can the average office worker do to help the environment besides putting recycling bins in the office?

lean on your boss to do more.
i work for a large multinational which makes lots of noise about being a 'responsible global citizen'. thankfully, they have to back up their claims with actual results, regardless of how cynical you are about their principles.

Almost all offices have high efficiency lighting ( according to todays paper that' 40% of the electricity ) so not much you can do there.

If PC's and office equipment is on powersaving or just turned off in the evenings you save most of the power. Powersaving on servers is scary

A lot of offices have air conditioning - so heat recovery ?
Better heat insulation - but that's a capital cost and a lot of office space is rented.

With todays traffic I'd guess that most wasteful thing would be the petrol in traffic jams. If employees could do something about that it would probably do more than all the little things in the office would do. Visualise the amount of petrol you use in the weekly commute ( milk cartons ) - can you see anything else that big ?

there's a comprehensive (free) staff bus service here, which is fantastic.

If suitable, facilitate employees to work from home.

Saves on all the commuting and has other major benefits.
