Some help with web pages please

Hy, I've just started teaching myself web design at home and I was hoping someone could maybe save me some time and point me in the right direction.

I'm not really interested in learning how to do simple websites from templates, I would like to have total control from start to finish as I'm very particular.

The thing is I don't really know where to start, a friend of mine lent me a book called 'Sams Teach Yourself to Create Web Pages in 24 Yours' He explains how to make them using Frontpage Express.

Would this be a good place to start or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Any help would be much appreciated

If you're very particular then stay away from wysiwyg editors and learn to code by hand. It's far better and much more enjoyable anyway once you get used to it.

I'd advise getting your hands on one of the sitepoint books http://www.sitepoint.com/books/html1/

It's not quite at beginner level but you should be able to pick it up fairly handily

there are also loads of tutorials available on line. I'll get a couple of links for you and post them when I get a chance.

Web monkey the place that I learned how to webpage it up, basic html etc..

Then get a good htm reference book and experiment with different pages.

After that have a look at dynamic HTML and javascript.
