I was taking photos of a part-time model over the weekend and wouldn't mind a bit of feedback on them. Here's a few:

I'd love to hear how I can improve!

    1. my fav
2.shadows really take away from it but nice pose
    3. background a bit distracting but nice pose also

flash and lighting is the problem i thinks, they are very dark, what did you use, built in or attached?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 771 ✭✭✭Rojo

thanks for the comments! Are they that dark?? Maybe I do need to calibrate my monitor!! Also, no flash for any of them. All natural light. Was planning on buying a reflector for this shoot, but didn't have the time to get one... :S

    EDIT:

just checked the photos in photoshop and they look much brighter in that... wft?

Like 2,3 although I would have blurred the background a
    bit more???

In number one she looks tired. It needs a little bit of PS
for the rings under her eyes.Other than that I like the shot.

the pose in number 2 doesn't look natural.

No 1 : I really like , nice pose and light
No 2 : shadows dont look god on her face
No 3 : her top isnt sitting right.. just something to watch out for

Ok, what's the best way to add blur, do you think? and the same with getting rid of the bags under her eyes? :o

I appreciate the comments so far!

Yeah it happened with a few shots. I wasn't looking out for that when I was taking the photos, but hopefully won't make that mistake in the future!

I would probably use the patch selection tool,
select the area under her eye and then once
selected drag slightly lower down her face.

Its hard to describe but if you have used the
tool you will know what i am talking about.

If not, put up a hi res version and i will do it
    step by step.

I'll give it a go, and if I cock it up then I might get your help!:p

quickly had a go at the eyes also.
should look much better when done
    to the high res version.

Have a look at them side by side.

I think the backgrounds are way too distracting for the image, I had a go at them myself but I couldn't get around how annoying it was.

i have an uneasy reaction to this sort of photoshoppage, i must say.

Yep. I sort of agree, unless you can make me look about 2 stone lighter, that is!

Agnes is a good looking girl, but I don't think No. 2 does her justice, either the lens is too wide or you're too close to her. And I'd use a much shallower dof if you're going to use busy backgrounds. What do I know? I'm just jealous!

    ;)

    You must be joking.

If he ever wants to sell his images, his work, etc... this would be
only the beginning of the stuff that he will be doing after a shoot
    in photoshop.

She looks much better, also she looked like that later in the shoot
    when she was smiling.

No model is perfect and there is always at the very least some
    blemishes to be cloned out.

You would swear I replaced her entire face with a mans face or
    something.

    i'm not joking.
i know this is usually required to sell work, but it doesn't mean i like it.
and she doesn't look 'much better' after it. i can barely tell the difference; if i hadn't seen them side by side, i'd have sworn they were identical.

Have you ever seen that "Janice ..... Modeling Agency" program ?

If someone like her was looking at these pictures and say Agnes
was trying to become a part of her agency.

She would rip these photos apart, not because there is anthing
wrong with the photos but beacuse she is an absolute b1tch with
zero tolerence of the smallest detail.

I can only assume that Rojo maybe hopes to sell images similar to
this in the future and I am trying to help him tweak the photos as
he said that he wanted to improve.
i know this is usually required to sell work, but it doesn't mean i like it.

I agree with you on this but I'm talking about the likes of the magazine
cover girls that are photoshoped so much that their skin doesn't look natural
anymore and their faces even worse etc...

In Rojo's case the skin tones are quite natural and none of the
suggestions in this thread have indicated that he change that
other than that they may be a bit dark etc....

    I could have said:

    go into channels,
select the red color channel, copy.
make new layer, paste red channel.
select guassian blur (not sure of amount, but not much)
    change mode to lumonisity.......
mask back in eyes, lips , hair etc....

    Then .....?

there is an article in March edition of practical photography on how to touch up glamour portraits like this in photoshop...

I think what Shiny did was very subtle and worked very well!!

magicbastarder, I'm no fan of that satin skin that is all too common in fashion photography, but what Shiny did was so subtle!! I watch America's Next Top Model... for the photography of course... ;) and the stuff they do to photos on that is unreal. The photos look nothing like the model by the end of it and as you said, you "can barely tell the difference" - well I'd consider that a good thing, personally! ;)

I'll throw up a high res copy later if you wouldn't mind doing it for me?

Borderfox, I liked the background change. It does make the photo stronger. I'll have to give it a shot!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

I *could* do it but how would you learn anything if I did ?

Its really easy once you know the steps...

patch tool is in the same section as the heal tool.

select the area under her eye.

then once selected just drag the area to another
place on her cheak, Ps will blend the rest.

    Go on, try it!!!

i know that's the thick end of the wedge, so i guess this is the thin end. which is still to be avoided.
