Problem removing alloy trim from Peugeot 307

    Hi,
I was replacing a tyre on my peugeot 307 for the first time at the weekend and had a problem removing the alloy trim on the wheel.
The manual indicated that it should be removed using the wheel brace and eased off using the tyre valve hole for grip.
I struggled for a while but couldn't budge it. There is no way I could see to get any grip with a wheel brace near the tyre valve hole. I recall someone else had to use a screwdriver to remove theirs but this seems dodgy close to a rubber typre.
In the end I took it to a garage and they replaced it with the new tyre.
Anyone know if there's a knack to it or am I missing something?

    Thanks
