How often do you get your motorhome serviced?

A lot of motorhomes only do little miles ...do you stick to the mileage schedule or service anually?

Me, I'm a firm believer in annual service. Oils and fluids deteriorate even when they're not in use, probably even more so. The same goes for rubber seals and bushings.

Last year I had my Iveco serviced at the local commercial vehicles/HGV specialists but wasn't too happy because as a private person with only one awkward vehicle I found myself somewhat down on their priority list.

Gonna try the local Fiat/Alfa garage this year ...they are new on the block and seemingly doing a good job (rare for Fiat, I know :D )

I got mine done at an independent guy who does alot of transits and ducatos etc. He was half the price quote by the Fiat dealer... plus I "didn't get a receipt" so saved a bit more.

Last time round I got a full fluid change and timing belt done... before I head away this summer I think I will just do an oil change myself, unless it looks scary for some reason.

My campers is in very regular use and we do the majority of regular servicing ourselves...and have a great friend in back-up for fixing stuff we can't do, and doing things we can't do (set up timing etc).

But he also shows us how to do the trickier stuff, so next time we can have a go ourselves. Blowing my own trumpet a little maybe...but hubby and I just recently did a complete engine swap...in just 5½ days...so we're reasonably handy with spanners, and continuing to learn all the time.

Most dealers/garages won't touch rear-engined vws...and to be honest, I don't want them working on it for just that reason. Would prefer it was done by someone who knows about them and enjoys working on them (i.e ourselves or our friend).

I'm very strict on oil/coolant and filter changes etc...and a bit anal about recording dates and mileage each time, so nothing gets overlooked.

I think that by doing as much of it as we can ourselves, we're at an advantage when my pride and joy (occasionally) breaks down...well it is 23 odd years old now, and not very well maintained by previous owners, so the occasional blip is to be expected.

There's ususlly a lot of space under the overhang behind the back axel where the spare wheel is stored. I store an inflatable boat and safari room on top of the spare wheel (well secured), I was planning to make a cradle for this area as it's about 2m by 1m by 0.5m. My fear is that the more space I have, the more I tend to load into it.

I brought mine to the Fiat dealers service department for a look over before I bought it a year ago. They were very good. I haven't been back yet but i will get it serviced before the summer of this year.

My van is due its first service since being mine soon.My very good local mechanic can't fit it in his garage and onto ramps:mad: So its a local Fiat garage for me.

A full service annually is the way I'll be going.
