How to contact an endocrinologist?

This is completely random, I know, but I've recently taken an interest in auto-immune diseases, and specifically the possible links between them. I'd like to discuss this with an endocrinologist (as research, let's say), but I've no idea how to locate one, or get an appointment with one! Has anyone got any ideas? Do you think I'd have to pay for a meeting with one, if it was for research and not a consultation?

Before anyone goes posting contact details or anything, a quick reminder that I am in Edinburgh and it's only useful if the doctor is also in Edinburgh! Cheers.

Contact the endocrinology department in one of the university teaching hospitals and speak with an endocrinology registrar.

If this is in relation to a personal medical issue where you think that you may have an endocrinological problem you really should deal with your GP first and follow up with onward specialist referral.

    Hi Faith,

Is their a specific reason for an endocrinologist rather than an immunologist? What about asking at the Infection and Immunity department in Edinburgh Uni?

The The Western General Hospital (Crewe Road South, Edinburgh EH4 2XU) provide Endocrinology services. Perhaps you could call them and arrange a 10 minute teleconference with an endocrinologist there.

Explain that you are interested in pursuing auto-immune reserach. Again, I'd suggest talking to some immunologists.

I went ahead and googled after I posted this thread, and found some good links within the University.

The reason for my interest is someone close to me has two different auto-immune diseases, and recently had breast cancer. While writing an essay last year, I found a paper that discussed a possible link between certain auto immune diseases and breast cancer. I'd like to discuss that with someone who might know about it, and also the different courses of treatment for hypothyroidism. There's loads of other stuff too, but I'll contact the people within the uni first. Thanks!

depending on the particular autoimmune disease, you might find some random haematologists might have a lot of info on blood related diseases.

your local path lab will have immunologists lurking in their biochem dept
