    Hey.

My friend just got a new bike and gave me his old Aprilla Habana [49cc]

Im 27 and dont have much of a clue about mopeds/motoring. My questions are probably gonna be hilariously stupid to anyone who knows anything about bikes.

There are some problems with the bike, and Id like to know a bit more about how serious they are before taking it on the road.
I dont intend to take it out on the road until I have fixed up some things. It needs quite a bit of work by the looks of things.

Firstly, the speedometer cable is not connected properly. It is on the front wheel, but basically cabletied to the part where my feet go.
This is dangerous me thinks. Would it be ok to completely remove the speedometer? Or should I fork out and get it fixed?

The body/cover is loose in parts. There are lots of screws missing. Would it be handy enough to find replacement screws?

The back break needs a new cable. :( Would this cost much? Im not goin anywhere on a bike with just a front break!

It needs to be kick started. Is the ignition just messed up from a bit of damp or low battery? or should I fork out and get that sorted too?

It was a really nice present I must say, but it looks like Im gonna have to invest a couple of hundred quid in it to get it fixed up.

    2 more little things.

    1]
Being such a noob, am I gonna get ripped off no matter where I go for service/repair?

    2]
Does anyone else round here have an Apprilla Habana? Just wondering.

    THANKS for any tips.

Im gonna go now and read the FAQ etc.

When you push the start button , does it sound a bit weak turning over ? If so its probably the battery is a bit weak to start it.
As far as screws for it go , they would either be plated or stainless ( to stop rust streaks everywhere) and may be all sorts of lengths , your best best is to find a habana in a bike breakers and get screws there.
Maybe post a pic of the speedo thing cabletied up .

    Thanks for your reply Bushy.

Ill post a couple of pics when I get a chance, hopefully tomorrow.

There wasnt a peep from the ignition, even after a few minutes revving it today. The lights etc are all fine.

Whats a bike breakers? :o:confused: sorry!

Hey womoma. The speedo/odo cables on habanas tend to go around the 8k mark. Have a look on ebay, you should get a replacement there quite cheap. I don't think its that tough to fit yourself.

City spares should have plenty of screws for a habana.

It sounds like the battery may need replacing, sounds like its not holding a charge. Again, they're not expensive. It certainly shouldn't cost you more than €100 for all the parts you need. Fitting them is not difficult.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. 100 for what I mentioned sounds great.

There was one problem I forgot to mention, and I think its a biggy.

My friend who gave me the bike said there is a problem with the front wheel. That the ball barings in the front wheel need to be replaced.

Ive taken it up and down my road and it "feels" fine to me. But Im not sure if its completely safe if there is a major problem with the front wheel.

Ill try do a couple of photos when my bro comes over with his camera.

You could easily end up pouring loads of Euro into this bike and still end up with a tatty 50cc moped.

If I was you I'd leave it and save for something decent.

Ive no problem with having a tatty 50 cc moped as long as its safe.

Ive always liked those retro styled mopeds to be honest. My bro had one a few years ago.

You'd want to do the bearings if theyre on the way out , bearings (generally) come in standard sizes so you can get them at a bearing supplier. It may be best to remove the wheel and bring it + bearings to a bike shop though.
