Quoting Bill Hicks

Does this piss anyone else off? I just find it annonying, perhaps because I'm a student and every second person worships the ground he threw his fag butts on. I dislike quoting in general (from being forced to use them in essays) but this especially annonys me-Bill hicks was a comedian, not a fountain of knowledge. He was not especially inciteful nor was his world view mind bendingly unique imo.

    Ok let the slating begin!

We really need to get the "Get it off your chest" thread restickied...

Why does he piss you off so much? He was a very funny guy  Now people who quote the Simpsons all the time, they really get on my tits...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭scojones

He wasn't just a comedian, he was a preacher and he was a brilliant one at that. Absolute legend of a man.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭So Glad

Well, I disagree with saying that quoting people who think as being annoying. The man was intelligent.

No need to shun him due to his popularity.

Its like anythin, if someone is quoted over and over, then it becomes jaded and cliched.

    My thoughts exactly.

He had a lot of great things to say.

He was, but the people who are quoting him aren't, or else not funny enough. Quoting cheapens his material, it cheapens a person's argument (if they were even making one) AND its really annonying to see one man's words brought up again and again. eg. Drugs thread-"ah, bill said some stuff about this. *Cut and paste* there, one valid post" not really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

If a pearl of his wisdom is relevant to a situation, use it, but don't overuse it and make it look like a moronic mantra. and always credit it to him if someone thinks it's yours, otherwise you will get found out and look silly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 570 ✭✭✭BrandonBlock

I dont see many references to bill hicks at all really on AH or boards in general, (Bar the drugs one) could you give me links to 10? That shouldnt be hard if "every second person" is quoting him..

Depends on topic & quote. Sometimes a short sentence can mean all the difference.

    hahahaha

    Just to piss you off:
“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

I said every second person in college here worships him. That's very different to what you implied.

people who over use quotes (simpsons, family guy etc etc) to get a laugh are unfunny sados who cant come up with an original humourous concept off their own bat.

I agree with this, it's worse still when they get a laugh for their stolen, unfunny jokes. However I don't hear people quote Bill often, so when I do hear it I like it, and can talk to the person more.

Oh, I see you're going for the "righteous indignancy" dollar. That's a good one.

As other people said, it will get old and cliched, and then something new will come along and grab the 'quote happy' people's attention. Evolution tbh

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,368 ✭✭✭thelordofcheese

Meh, sometimes a quote [not just from bill hicks, but anyone] can fit the conversation and thats all well and good.

But overuse or trying to shoehorn a quote in because you have nothing better to say doesn't work.

I agree. It's annoying. He seems to have replaced Monty Python in this regard.

Never heard of the bloke either until I saw people quoting him on boards. If I haven't heard of him then he must not be much good anyway. :)

edit: oi, how did my post get up 'ere!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,698 ✭✭✭InFront

Not everyone worships him, I didn't know who he was until I googled him, can't really see anything very impressive. The Nietzsche of comedy, why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,698 ✭✭✭InFront

Ah, but you're psychic ruu! (stay outta my mind:) )

    Someone called him that??

Ah, in fairness, he's a funny guy - it's the quoting that kills the humour.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

That's pretty much my biggest problem with it simu.

Its funny I only found out about this guy a few days ago. Someone linked me to a vid of him on youtube and I was like "holy ****, this guy is so on the ball. How have I not heard of him before??"

Then I realized he was talking about bush senior, so I looked him up. Found out he died years ago :( The world needs more people like him

    *wipes tear from eye*

One of my all-time comic heros/critics.

The world is a lesser place without him.
"George Bush says 'we are losing the war on drugs'. Well you know what that implies? There's a war going on, and people on drugs are winning it! Well what does that tell you about drugs? Some smart, creative mother****ers on that side."

ps. Never quoted him before until this thread popup up...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I really never liked him. Which is odd, because I think Denis Leary is hilarious and he pretty much copied Hicks, but he goes for comedy instead of political statements which is much more prefereble when you want to take your mind off the real world :D

And anyway, Hicks was just a poor mans Lenny Bruce.

Yeah, he is full of anger at times, but I suppose that is the appeal.

Bill Hicks is the Michael Moore of stand up comedy. Highly enteraining, but its only when you scratch the surface you see how flawed some of his logic was.

I like his work but as Ruu said/implied, he is quite underground, I could count on one hand the amount of people I know who have seen his shows (actually I can only confirm one, but I can think of a few others who likely know who he is). Im sure Youtube has made him bigger, but Ive never seen him on tv.

Richard Pryor, now hes the business. Go to Youtube and watch the Pryor on Fire act (where he talks about accidentally setting himself on fire while freebasing coke. I guarantee, you will be crying and your ribs will hurt its that good)

The one thing that quoting The Simpsons has ensured is that hammock buying will never ever be taken seriously ever again.

Quoting as a last resort when all one's wit is exhausted can be annoying, regardless of who's being quoted.

FWIW, I believe Hicks was a master of irony. He didn't practice what he preached. He knew what dollars he was targeting, and he did it very well. I guess the fact that his smoking killed him was the final irony. He took his own advice and killed himself, effectively.

Despite this, what he preached was damn funny. But don't forget he was a comedian, not a prophet. Methinks the most annoying thing about Hicks is the idolotry.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,284 ✭✭✭pwd

He was much bigger in Ireland and England than he was in america.
I used to think this was because people here are more open-minded and clever to appreciate such edgy witty stuff.
Then I read his biography and found out it was more a case of him being off his head on drugs and alcohol so much in his earlier days that he was banned from performing in some clubs, and basically frequently made a tit of himself. (In one instance he had a bad trip and curled up in the foetal position on stage and quivered). When he came over here he had stopped making a tit of himself so much.

i find it odd that people still think of Bill Hicks as a comedian, as opposed to someone who shouted his own opinions and views on the world at other people, who know right f*cking well these views, as they're pretty much common sense.

he's the kurt cobain of "comedy". derivative, over-rated, and overall, not really very good at what they do.

the guys was a humourous comedian, but dont mix up angry opinion and anti-establishment with well though out and inciteful world views.

and the greater irony are the people that will defend hicks like he was some sort of personal savour.
surely you should turn the other cheek and forgive?

    /irony.
