5.1 Sound

This problem now is driving me up the wall. I can't get any sound card to work right with my 5.1 speakers. The speakers are about 2 or 3 years old, Dell 5.1 speakers.

The 8400 they came with - worked fine with onboard sound.

My current computers onboard Realtek Onboard - works fine also

With Audigy 2 - only either the rear or front speakers work - not both at once, and the center speakers won't work at all. This seemed to be a common occurance but all the fixes won't work for mine, so it's obviously not the same common problem.

With C-Media 5.1 - All speakers bar the center one work, but the rear ones cannot be controlled - i.e turning down sound to minimum (0), the front ones are mute, but the rear ones are as loud as if they were turned up high. The center speaker won't work either - so basically I can't use them, as I have absolutely zero way of controlling the output on the rear set.

They work with both sets of onboard sound....so why these unusable issues with dedicated cards? At this rate I'm going to have to bin them for a 10 quid pair of **** speakers...

    Hi Havok

To answer your question properly you have to describe how you have it all connected and how the "software" is set? One of the most common mistakes made with surround setups is if have a decoder builtin in your speaker set you need to "disable" one of the active decoders in your whole setup. The Audigy 2 has a software decoder and often so has software DVD players. You should only have ONE decoder active at a time for it to work properly.

It can also be that the "pin configuration" of the jack plug (if the speaker set is connected via jacks) is different on the soundcard contra the speaker set.

Anyways write Creative support they should be able to help you properly... ;)

I forgot about the pin configuration on the card actually, I'll give that a go first of all. Thanks.

How do I disable a decoder in my setup, if there is indeed more then one in use? Sorry - been a user of onboard sound for far too long and wanted a dedicated card to free up my processor for a few more frames...so I'm not too well up on it.
