AA navigator with Navteq now have 100% Irish coverage.

The problem is, what version is the one in Aldi ? Is it this version with full coverage ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭CivilServant

Are you sure, I've heard Irish maps have pretty poor coverage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,956 ✭✭✭✭Villain

I have the latest AA Navigator with the latest Navteq maps and it has about 95% coverage, it really is only missing new housing estates, every road is on it though my cul de sac laneway in carlow, but I'm just not sure if this product comes with the latest maps installed, I'm say it does but can't be sure seeing as it doesn't mention what Navteq maps are used.

can the latest maps not just be downloaded off the net?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,956 ✭✭✭✭Villain

I don't think so for AA Navigator, for Garmin yes.

    Hi,

I've been searching for info about this all evening.

Does anyone know if this can be used 'off-road' so to speak. I'd like a handheld GPS for trekking but if this gadget can do both roads and tracks I'd buy it.

As for the software? AFAIK it's the latest version.

Got to aldi in childers road in limerick about 20 to 9, was already about 30 people there, line got longer fast I was lucky about quarter to nine like the guy in tallagt a guy came out with sheets saying sat nav on them we took one and it seemed like everyone who wanted one got one so no shortages
    worked out very well

this product is real top range
100% coverage from what I see
though I noticed the fermoy bypass isnt on it
    anyone tried updating it yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭EyesOnly

Pfft i went to athlone and was 15th in queue and only 10 avalible, which i would have got one only 8 in front of me wanted them, if it wasnt for 2 $%^& that jumped the queue and grabbed them and the guy handing them out couldnt give a %^&* even after telling them to get back and looked at me "hold me to get back in the queue" but still give it to them.

Not a great unit folks - no touch screen you have to use a stylus and the antenna looks a bit bulky - does have Navteq maps though which are pretty good

Same in Clonmel, only 10 units!!!
It's an absolute disgrace that they are allowed advertise a product for sale and not even attempt to stock sufficient numbers. Same story with Lidl before x-mas, advertised 37" LCD's, only 3 in Mitchelstown and only 4 in Fermoy, why bother??

How can you have no touch screen and have to use a stylus ???? hahahahah :)

Anyways, I've been using mine now for 2 days and i can confirm it has a touch screen, only discovered the stylus after a couple of hours.

One spends some time amusingly thinking that you entered destination addresses telepathically.

Havn't got a word of German but it looks like the new sat nav device on the Aldi website will be considerably dearer than €200. New one €359. I would expect that these won't sell out so quite so quickly. I wonder what else it does. It's also an MP 3 player.

I couldn't find a 400 model anywhere but the 4000 model comes up all over the place including the lidl.de website along with the same pic. I wonder if it's a typo?

    Here

If it is the same one then it looks like an even better deal than the Aldi one.

Websites linked to are translated by Google.

Here's a link to the English manual.

It seems that it is the Silver version of the 4000 - running on Windows CE - looks great - definitely going to be outside Lidl at 8am for this one if it is.

I'll try and source more info on the Lidl one, is it navteq software?
It has complete western europe so potentially could be better than the aldi one

If you google this model you will find a few threads. Out since 2005 , not a great MP3 player , problems with 7 digit post codes in uk and maps could only be updated by returning to factory. Don't know if that is still the case with this one but if I was buying one I'd like to know ! Especially if it doesn't have the Navtech Version 9 maps . Happy Garmin 300 owner!

It still sold out in minutes when it went on sale in aldi last week!

    Hi All,

I actually bought the Aldi Sat Nav last week but cannot get it to work.

The Navigation icon does nothing. I have put the memory card into a different card reader and it seems to be blank.

I went onto Evesham site, registered etc... but got no troubleshooting info. Tried ringing them several times waiting upto 30 mins each time and then was disconnected. This in itself is worrying i suppose.

My brother also bought one which he is very happy with. Do you think I could risk putting his memory card into mine or could I damage it?

I dont really want to take it back for a refund if I thought there was a simple way of getting it to work. Alternatively would it be possible to copy his card to a hard drive and the download it onto my card?

Apologies for all the questions but after the queueing etc.. for it in the first place I would really like to try and get it working.

the maps etc are all on the supplied CD altho they were on the memory card for me

How do I go abou just putting the name of the road i want to go to on one of these?

    Its wrecking my head

"Gary the great", had the same problem myself for a few minutes ... you put in the countys name first , then select the area its in (For example put in Dublin, then all the areas like Dublin 4 / Dublin 22 / etc etc pop up).

Select the area you want so Clondalkin would be Dublin 22 , select Dublin 22, then pop in the road you want in Dublin 22 you want ... Alpine Heights / Monastery Road / Woodford Lawn etc etc etc ... (all those road names are real if you want to use them for a test!), then it will give you a selection of house numbers on the road.

    Hope that helps,
    Darthrodney

Thanks "DarthRodney", does this system use AA navigator 2007?

Thats the one on mine so they should be the same.

What i do is select Easy Navigation.
Then i get "find you address statring with :
-A postode (useless for Ireland as it doesnt seem to have the Irish numerical postcodes)
    -A town in IR
    -another country

So I select a town. If i put Dublin in it asks me " Dublin town centre or POI in Dublin. I get no option for the postcode.
If i put a town in, lets say Tallaght, it cant find it. Although when i put it in the car and drive about, it has every little road and estate in tallaght.

    Any ideas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 61 ✭✭Darthrodney

    Gary,
You're almost there .... Select Easy Navigation.
Then "find you address statring with - A town in IR - you need to type in D.u.b.l.i.n IN FULL , what you described is what happens if you type in less than the full name of the county! , after you type Dublin in full tap the green arrows to the right hand side of the screen and and all the dublin 2 / 4 / 22's etc will show ... then enter the road...

    That should do it ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,665 ✭✭✭gary the great

Cheers Darth, thanks for that. i was being lazy and just pressing D.U. for dublin!

I'll have a look later and hopefully that sorts it out,
    Thanks again!

Back again on sunday 20th of may!!!!

Its right down at the bottom of the page on the aldi website Click

    Talk about hiding it away!!!!
Who ever looks down at the bottom of the page......Except me!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,665 ✭✭✭gary the great

Is it any use though, thats the real question. What do you people who bought it think of it?

I went for the AA navigator in the end and its grand (most of the time), can sometimes take a few mins to pick up a signal and can freeze sometimes, but other than that its fine!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 61 ✭✭Darthrodney

I think its a grand buy for 200Euro ... The maps are up to date apart (I've only found one road that wasn't on them and it only opened a few months ago!) , it recalculates on the fly if you miss a turn etc.

The only issue i've found is that entering the address sometimes can be tricky as you pretty much need the exact address ... if you put in "Dublin" then "Clondalkin" it won't work ... put in "Dublin 22" then the road name in Clondalkin I.E. "Monastery Road" it works perfectly then gives you the option for a range of house numbers on the road I.E. Number 1-12 , 13-24 etc.

Voulme is good , options like night time colour change help , a route planner and viewing option too ...

    I'm happy with mine.

How does this unit compare with the Airis T920? Good value, or is the Airis worth the extra €40?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,608 ✭✭✭Victor_M

I bought one of these yesterday and first impressions are very good, have to say darthrodneys advice on finding addresses saved me a fair bit of frustration, only problem is that the estate i live in isn't mapped so when i programme a route it calculates the route but doesn't start to do anything until i drive out on the the main road. Once it starts it seems perfect.

I bought for the missus so It's crucial she doesn't have a bad experience at the beginning or she will just stick it in the glove box and stop using it. Has any one been misled by it or can it be fully trusted to go the best route?

DarthR have you worked out how to remove favorites that you don't want any more (i'm tring to compile a list of all the regular places she goes to make it as simple as possible but i've added loads of duplicates).

Also if I want to upgrade to Europe maps any idea which version of AA navigator to order, when asked for the device type on the AA website the Evesham 6400 doesn't show up as an option.

    Thanks,

    VM

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 61 ✭✭Darthrodney

VICTOR M , Glad the advice helped on the address side of things ... afraid i don't know yet how to remove the favourites or about the updating of the maps ... I haven't gotten that stage yet.
