Just to let folk know that according to good sources there will be no shortage of PS3s on launch day, in fact most of the stores have had so few preorders that they will be left with stock on their shelves.
Sony will probably talk this up as being their care to ensure a plentiful supply of machines but I reckon its a testement to the high price and derivative line up the PS3 has in store for early adopters. Also the time of the year is way outside of the tradition console buying period, Q4 of any given year.
Sony may well have egg on their face after this one.

Damit, a shortage was the only way that I was gonna stop myself buying one when it comes out! Arse to that now

I agree that the time of year dictates mass purchases, but I am inclined to believe that it's also due to a large supply being available to us at launch.
For it being March there is still quite a few pre-orders being made.

As a Sony begrudger (although perhaps reconsidering after the wonderful LittleBigWorld video), I would like to think that there will be an underwhelming PS3 launch. But realistically, I think it will be a sellout. The playstation is a huge brand, and there will be many who will rush out to buy it based on the brandname alone. Not everyone is informed as those of us who frequent the internet. And there will be many who can easily afford it, and buy it on launch day because its new and shiny. Not only casual gamers, but many here on boards will buy one as well - it is a damn fine piece of technology, and that will win many over.
While I complain against the disdain we are treated with by Sony, I still feel the PS3 launch will be huge over here.

Your relentless defence of the ps3 knows no bounds. Bravo!!!

Well according to gamesindustry.biz "Woolworths, Amazon and Play, to name a few, are reporting record breaking pre-orders and an overwhelming demand for PS3."

I don't see why Irish retailers would be finding it any different to British ones. I do think they'll be easier to come by though since its a delayed launch and they've got plenty of supply at this stage 4 months after its original launch.

the local xtra-visions in my area are offering a PS3 and a decent game for cut price to try and drum up some more pre-orders. Looks like the launch will be a sham.

how much is the basic package gonna cost and wot will it be

GOD I HOPE TO GOD ITS A TERRIBLE LAUNCH, Not because i think the console is bad or anything, not because its overpriced(although it is) but just to show sony that they cant screw over us europeans and to make sure that they start fixing the massive faults in the marketing of the machine, ie the cost and the lack of backwards compatibility.

I'll be amazed if it sells out more than once

Its just sittin on shelves over in the USA and Japan since November

4 million consoles have been shipped [and launched] yet less than 2 Mil have been sold

Yet again Unreggd, you have neglected to mention that 3/4 of the machines on shelves is the US and Japan are the 20GB basic model, which may be a key factor in us only getting the premium model.

I'm surprised that gameshops are still taking pre-orders at this late stage. Two things will really hurt this launch - the most obvious is the huge price. €750 with two games and an extra joypad is the best offer I've seen. The second is the timing of the launch. Both the Wii and 360 were big sellouts at their launches because they came out in time for the must-have Christmas market. Sony have totally missed that here.

Crap PS3 launch FTW!!!! I know the BC was crap on the 360 but at least there was no discrimination over which region you were in.

I have noticed that HMV on Grafton Street was looking for a e150 deposit before, but walking past today I see it's been painted over with a e75... Not getting the preorder figures they want?

Not sure why they had it so high in the first place, my GAME preorder was e50.

It is pretty unusual that xtra vision have that advertisement on tv so near to the launch alright. Isn't it 700 euro in smyths for the console and a game? They mut be finding it hard to get the amount of preorders they need if xtravision have it for six hundred and something?

Theres like 175 preorders in Smyths already, and thats just one of the shops

Also, the offers are between 655 and 750

665, same as xtravision but xtravision have more games to choose from

    http://www.toys.ie/

unless its cheaper instore, does anyone know if you can get f1 instead of resistance and motorstorm with the ps3 for 665 in smyths?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 261 ✭✭Kevin2006

I booked the ps3 in Smiths today myself, 665 euro with motorstorm or RFOM, store card and 10 euro worth of vouchers! Best place to book it IMO.

    here here!

Yeah, the offer on the site is one of 6, and there'll probably be more offers by launch night

    I think its either 655 or 665 with F1

On the whole, snigger snigger, I think Sonys woes, if they really have any, come down to a couple of factors.
For starters the machine is incredibly expensive, thanks to the inclusion of a BluRay player nobody will use for a couple of years.
Because of the high price and the losses, something in the order of $250 per console, incurred by each sale, no price drops likely in the next year, by which time the 360 will have dropped to below €300 for the premium.
The timing of the launch is all wrong by anyones standards, Q4 is the only time, plenty of money, chrimbo on the horizon, kids treating the Argos catalogue as the true gospel, and they've let that slip due to worries about undersupplying the US and Jap markets during the Q4 06.
Launch lineup is derivative at best, only Resistance and Motorstorm looking like great exclusive launch games, although Gears Of War scores better than Resistance and as for Motorstorm, I've never played an off road racer that did anything bar shortterm arcade thrills, not something you want to pay such a vast price for, the rest of the games, reheats of 360 games or too poor to mention.
Now, I want to buy one, but thats just the early adopter in me, I can wait til Christmas 07 when there will more to make that €630 price seem like good gaming value.
There is no real use in hating Sony of the sake of it, they have released such a vast array of excellent software, Okami, SOTC, God of War, MGS series all stellar games, their consoles up to now have presented the gamer, certainly this one, with more gaming hours well spent than an other manufacturer, its just there is so little to justify a PS3 to sit next to my 360, not yet anyway.

thanks to the inclusion of a BluRay player nobody will use for a couple of years.

Are you mad?! You can buy blu-ray films from loads of websites on the net for nearly the same price as a normal dvd, some are even cheaper! And they look amazing - Ice Age 2, Crank etc. Im deffinately going to be useing it anyway!
Launch lineup is derivative at best,

There are enough games available for me anyway - 2 or 3 games will keep me happy for at least a few weeks. And they are great games - Rainbow 6 Vegas, GRAW 2, Motorstorm, Resistance etc.. Hardly 'derivative'!
I've never played an off road racer that did anything bar shortterm arcade thrills, not something you want to pay such a vast price for,

What are you smoking! You can get ps3 games on cdwow for 58 euro, which is less then for 360 games!

Yea talking poo? Both the cheapest PS3 and 360 games are £39.99 STG on cdwow.com

I agree with Cidermans off-road racers, boring within a few days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,326 ✭✭✭Zapp Brannigan

Ciderman, bit harsh to compare Resistance to GoW. I mean it took a year for the 360 to get it out, and Resistance is a launch title.
As most people know, no console is at its best at launch. Give it a year when DMC, MGS and all that come out then we can compare the games.

Well, you're still wrong though :)
CDWOW are selling their 360 games for the same price, you said the PS3 games were cheaper. €57.99 seems to be CDWOW's magic number for games for both consoles.

But I agree, "vast price" is completely off, early rumours that the games would cost a lot are totally off (unless some retailers over charge, but some were doing that with 360 games anyway).

A derivative launch line up? A full line up sure, full of titles that have already had a showing on the 360, a machine half the price of the PS3, in fact even less if you take into account many of the excellent trade in deals out there.
As for Bluray, most of the folk out there have little interest in HD movies yet. They may be available but theres not to many bothered and how many HD sets can handle 1080p anyway?
And as for the vast price, I do most of my game shopping in actual physical shops like Gamestop, and there you will find PS3 games are expensive.
Don't get me wrong, 360 games are expensive too, but at least you save a few bob at the console purchase.

Blu-ray can play 1080i, which nearly all hdtv's support. Not much of a difference between the two on a lcd less the 40".
