Moving home

I am considering making the move from the UK, to return home to Dublin.

Basically, I am looking for advice - what to expect from the dreaded job search, best way to approach schools, best time to harrass them etc.

I have made a list of schools I will be able to get to from my house and have a good letter and CV drafted. My plan was to begin sending these out to heads after the Easter break. I would then follow this up with a phone call.
But is this worth doing while I'm still in the UK? Do positions come up immediately or could I be lucky and get my name in there for maternity leave etc in September? Obviously should they wish to interview me, I need a weeks notice to get leave.

I'm Secondary English, with 2 years teaching experience and have taught RE, PSHE and EFL. I also have had a guidance role this year.
With EFL experience would it be plausible to get into a school as Language support then try and move over to English?

What kind of questions come up in interviews for schools in Ireland?
I've been reading up on the Curriculum reviews and keeping abreast on the recent news so feel I could discuss matters with some clarity.

Would I be right in assuming most jobs are advertised in the Times on Sundays and the Indo?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm afraid there are lots of English teachers out there. Be prepared for lots of subbing and years on a contract before any permanent position, unless you are very lucky indeed. Most interviews will be for part-time hours so they are not very in depth. A willingness to do extra-curricular (unpaid) stuff is always welcomed.

Calling in to a school in person is always better than just sending a CV - we get many CVs - they tell you nothing really, but a person in front of you engaging with any kids that are around is ahead of the pack to begin with.

You might pick up language classes in night schools. The govt allowance of hours for ESL children is derisory so even in a large second-level school with many of these children there isn't a full position for it.

There is no 'Irish Times' on Sunday. The Indo seems to be the place for most job adverts, along with annual 'catch all' ads from the VECs - to make up their panel.

    Hi Spurious

Cheers for the information. Unfortunately it will be nigh on impossible to pop into schools from the UK. I can only get time off work to come over if I actually have an interview. So, I shall do my best to make an impression in the meantime and see if something comes up.

I'm aware of how tough it is out there, but in my part of the UK a teacher surplus is beginning to materialise in some subjects. I wish to return home for personal reasons anyway.

Re: the allowance for EAL pupils. Is this not about to be enhanced for 2007/08 year?
