New PC, Can't Get On Net

Right, I bought a custom built pc on adverts a week ago. I only got a monitor today and am trying to connect it to the internet now. I'm not able to at the moment.

    LINK

    There is the pc ^^

I've plugged the ethernet cable from my router into the pc, the ethernet port lights up but nothing happens on the pc. I go to network connections, nothing.

I think it's because the drivers for the ethernet controller aren't installed. That's what is coming up.

    How do I install these?

    Help appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Timans

I'm not too sure to be honest.

    I presume so.

I never built the pc or anything, and usually the pc's i've used have all this kind of stuff already done.

    :D

    Is the ethernet card on-board?

If the Network is onboard then you possible don't have the motherboard drivers installed. The PC will still function as normal albeit you'll be without any extra features that your motherboard has (onboard ethernet being one of them).

I did a quick search for the motherboard on google and found these drivers: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/BIOS/Asus/Asus-P4P800-VM.shtml

So, that will do everything for me?

    Thanks.

Here's the drivers from te Asus website.

Install the drivers and then re-boot the PC. You may need more drivers for other devices.

Right click on My Computer and select properties, Click the Hardware Tab then Device manager.

Any devices which are not installed properly will have a yellow circle with an Exclamation Mark in it.

Expand the LAN tree and pick the XP driver.
Inside the zip, extract the folder ending with XP32.

What I'd do from here is go back to the desktop right-click 'my computer', select 'manage'... head into the device manager and take a look around... the adapter may already be installed under 'Network adapters" or it may appear in another category as an unknown device.
When/if you find it on the list, double-click the device, in the new window that opens; select 'Driver' then 'Update Driver' then choose 'install from a list or specific location' then click next...
what I usualy do at this point is to just let windows "search for the best driver" in the path I specify... so you can just check the "include this location in the search" and browse to where you extracted the driver folder.
If all goes well, it should pick up the right driver and you can just 'next' next next your way through the rest of it.

I'm burning it do a disc now.

I'll throw it on to my pc when it's finished.

    Thanks very much!

Another problem I've noticed is that when I try and play a song, it says it can't because there is no audio device installed even though I've plugged the audio cable from the pc to the monitor with speakers.

Is this more drivers I need?

    Well, thanks guys.

I'm posting this from my pc. Lovely!

    Really appreciate the replies lads.

    Anybody know about the sound?

Your soundcard is probably on-board too so you can use the same link as DonkeyStyle \o/ posted, except click Audio and download the driver.

Yeah and make sure it's enabled in the BIOS

Enter the BIOS (Usually by pressing delete when booting) and look for onboard devices, Audio, and make sure its enable.

Or download and install the drivers and see if it works, if not try the above

Onboard sound (sound hardware built into the motherboard) can be enabled/disabled in the BIOS setup... which is a low-level configuration page that you can access only during the first few seconds when the computer is starting up.
The key to access the BIOS setup varies... in my experience the most common one is DELETE... but F1, F2 etc. are also popular.

You should look for a category called 'integrated peripherals' (I think it's in there anyway) ... then there should be something like "Onboard audio" or some reference to "AC97" which you should set to enable or auto.

Although if you've got unknown sound/multimedia devices in device manager, it's a good sign that it's probably already enabled.

tbh if it seems confusing; I'd just try installing the driver and see if it works before looking in the BIOS... it may already be enabled.

Yeah, it says Unknown Multimedia Audio in Device Manager so, I'd say it will be alright.

Thanks a million for your help everyone!
