Annoying high pitch sound from 580EX flash

    Hi,

I just got a new 580EX flash and have been messing around with it. There is a constant high pitch noise from it that I'm worried about. The noise changes when the flash fires but returns to the same constant high pitch afterwards. The flash batteries are new. My 350d camera battery is probably a bit low and needs a charge.

Anyone with a 580ex experienced similar noise? I would expect the noise to be there just after the flash fires and then reduce but people across a room can hear it no problem.

    Ta in advance,
    JP

    That's what 580's do I'm afraid. It's operating normally.

The only advice I can give is wait until you get to my age and you wont hear it ;)

Replace it with the Sigma DG 500 Super, mine at least is absolutely silent.

have to agree with mathias on this one, have a 580ex (20d) - no such noise, using alkaline batteries anyway. Are you using rechargeables?

Emm...is it not just teh capacitors charging?

you'd expect to hear that after discharging the flash, but not constantly... unless maybe you're using low power rechargeables - the capacitor might not be reaching capacity???

Capicators tend not to reach capacity....or not 100% anyway...just very very close...

I'm using the new batteries that came with it. They look cheap so mightbe contributing to the problem. As soon as I find/purchase some good ones I'll see if it makes a difference.

It is just the capacitors charging up, then every two seconds the flash will emit a high pitched beep. One of the features of the new 580II is that it is silent throughout it's operation.

Yes mine does this. As Roen said - just when it's charging, and then a short beep every couple of seconds. It is very high frequency though - I suspect they all do it but not everybody hears it...

It's fairly well documented, do a google on it and you'll get quiet a few hits that describe the intermittent beeping/whine. Mine does it and my mates does it too, after checking it seems to be normal.
There was also a lengthy thread on FM about it too. But their search facility is brutal.

Google search Hope it's what you are describing.
