Well obviously this rescue wasn't down to the dog reading Nietzsche and wearing a monocle, he licked them because he wanted to get out of the house for himself. That's any animal's natural instinct around fire. I don't think any dog would do that from 'intelligence'.
They don't think like we do, but people don't love dogs because of what's on their reading list.

Now I can't get the mental image of a dog with a monocle out of my head.

I agree - why the hell would the dog go back in if it had gone to the bother of waking its owners so that they could let him out? did he leave his favourite bone behind or something?

Remember folks, in the event of fire, get out - stay out - get the fire brigade out!
