Unknown Monitor or Grafix card problem

A friend just rang me. His PC monitor just went blank, tells him that there "is no imput signal". if he reboots it works fine for a min or 2 and then same issue again. Any ideas?

He probably tried changing the resolution to something that the monitor doesn't support.
The PC boots up, lets him log in, but when the Windows desktop is ready to display, it changes to the bad resolution.

Maybe boot into safe mode, and choose a safe resolution, eg. 800 x 600 just until he gets Windows back up and running again.
Ideally, ensure that windows device manager knows the exact monitor make and model also.
