I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on BJJ or MMA live-in type courses. I've found a couple in Thailand (tiger muay thai and mma phuket), but haven't unearthed much in the way of reviews. I have a faint recollection that someone mentioned on here a while back that judomick did some type of live in thing in Brazil, but the search function is giving me a bit of gip here.

I should say I'm pretty much a beginner. Did a few months in SBG and I've been away for a year travelling. Back home now, the SSIA has paid off and I'm thinking of heading off again, this time to do something a little more productive ;)

Chris Brennan was supposed to have done one in his old gym but I don't know about his newer place.

You cuould just bring a sleeping bag and crash o the matts, then await the beating when you're found there...;)

    Hey Scoob,

Give Tiger Muay Thai a wide berth. They have no Bjj or MMA training. They offer trainers a wage, free training and accomodation to teach there but they never pay them so they only stay a month or so.

    Check out
    www.jiujitsucamp.com/
    thats in brazil, or
    Muaythaicamps.com
that's in chiang mai, where I am.

We currently have a Brazilian Top Team brown belt, living and teaching at the camp. Pedro Lott Capello. He teaches twice a day, and we have some kick ass Muay Thai fellas here too.

The brazilian place is the one Pedro recommends to anyone who asks about live in jiu jitsu training.

    Hope this helps

Yes they do. They have a cage there too. Ray Elbe is instructing out there for MMA at the moment I believe.

Mate of mine was over in Tiger for a few weeks, mostly for the Thai but he said there was constantly people training MMA over there.

I hope Tiger isn't crap coz I'm going there for three weeks in September - anyone who isn't competing against them have any opinions ?

I'm gonna do an MT class in the morning and an MMA class each afternoon 5 days a weeks for three weeks. Acommodation for me and the girlfriend plus training for myself is gonna cost about 500 euro which isn't bad in all fairness. They say they have a cage, a ring and an MMA trainer - sounds good to me.

Anyone interested should check the site out

Soretoe, i've heard from a few people who've trained there. From what I gather, it's not as strict as other camps and the training isn't as serious. Ray Elbe is teaching MMA there now and he's alot of experience in MMA over in the US, wins more than he loses.

I think there will be alot for you to learn, but it may be up to yourself to push yourself there. the facilities look nice, and if anything - it will be an escape from here for a while :)

Do all of these camps expect you to get in and fight some thai lad or is that dependent on experience? I'm asking because when I was passing through Thailand last year I went to a couple of muay thai nights and there were a couple of 7 year olds fighting at one of them that could whoop my ass....so I'm not into fighting with their older brothers;)

I'm not competing with them, they are at the other end of the country, and I make nothing from the gym I'm training in. I'm passing on what I've heard from a few people, who left because of the way the trainers were walking out. They say that tiger's mma teacher quit after about one month, because they don't get paid. Maybe they have sorted this situatuation out with Ray Elbe but I don't know. I recommend talking to someone who has been there recently.
The General concensus over here is that Tiger has good facilities, friendly trainers and good atmosphere but it's training is geared only towards total beginners, has little or no structure and very little or no sparring and the by word is MONEY! Or so everyone says. Maybe it's all changed.

That's more of less what I heard, the camp is casual or at least was.

Just had a look at the site. Seems very expensive. Not the training, which is about average, cheap even, especially for the south. But the price of the rooms is is a bit steep. Don't get me wrong, they look nice but you're not going there for the rooms. Though I suppose if you have your girlfriend with you, they are a must.
I also heard that it is very busy, and getting personal training and pad time can be difficult in high season. Sure everyone will get some, but wouldn't everyone prefer lots?
And their bike prices seem way off. 1000 baht will buy you a mountain bike, brand new, in most shops on the mainland. Motorbikes can be rented for much less too.
A final piece of info, if your staying in air con rooms, be sure to bring plenty of vitamins, especially vit c, to help fight colds, the sniffles etc, as the hot to cold can increase your chances.
Where ever you stay/train, you are going to have a deadly time man. Best of luck with it.

Cheers for the info Hammerhead, I am personally only a beginner at MMA so I 'm sure whatever they have to offer will suit my ability - I'm just after a bit of hard training....some BJJ....some MT ....sparring if poss, some body fat loss and some sun ....everything else is a bonus! Flights for 850'sh, training and accom for 500 and some spending......3 weeks .....probably would spend close to that on the piss 3 weeks in Majorca or somewhere like that.......Phuket for 3 weeks and comming back in better health and in better shape sounds better to me...can't wait......need to get down to bridgestones new gym soon !

ill post rough costs, when i get the time, bjj camps in brazil are a waste of money, your better off picking a school and staying in a hostel, will be alot cheaper, and you will get more out of it!

There is MMA here in Pattaya... I am learning Sub Wrestling (which obviously includes a good mix of BJJ)...the instructor is very good at explaining it.
He teaches full MMA, but at the mo I am just going to him for grappling. once I get the basics down and get them inside out(about a year I think!!!) I will worry about putting it all together.

250 Bhat for a private one on one (which is about 5 euro) so I am taking 3 grappling classes a week in afternoon. good value. (thats on top of 5 - 6 mornings of Muay Thai).
