    Hey,
I am going into first year in Galway next year, and I've decided I want to stay in Corrib Village (good idea?!). I was wondering what the difference was between the general sstudent resedencies and corrib village apartments? The latter are roughly 10 euro dearer per week. What do you get for the extra money and is it worth it?

    Many thanks,
    Dave

i didn't live in corrib, but i know loads of people who have, they all seem to have had piles of fun there despite hating the place. i'm currently in cuirt na coiribe. it's fancy but very prison like, gort na coiribe is also a good place, but as far as i know both places are booked out so the corribean may be the place for you

i lived in corrib village in 1st year and i would recommend it to 1st years only. its great place to meet ppl beacuse of the way the apartments are set up and the village attracts 1st years so you will meet loads of ppl. i moved to gort na coiribe in 2nd year and it was brilliant too. a much nicer place to live- proper couches and all!!! and plus i knew plenty of people from 1st year.

basically 1st years at nuig live at corrib village every1 else stay away

as regards the accommodation in corrib village it is very basic and i mean very basic. but it is sufficent. one thing i will say is be careful of the heaters as we got screwed with ours and ended up with huge bills. set the timer, dont just switch it on te wall when u need it. hope this helps

Im hoping to go into 1st year in NUIG next year and a friend of mine is going to GTI. Is it possible to get accomadation together in Corrib Village or is it only for NUI students? Any other student accomadation have rules about where you're attending?

Hello! I'm an American student and I'm going to be studying at NUI Galway next semester (Fall '07). This will be my 3rd year of university, and I will be 20 years old. I must admit that I am completely unfamiliar with the housing system that NUIG has, since it's very different here in the States.

I'm having a lot of trouble choosing where to live, and I was hoping you all could help me out. I'd like to have a single room, but I'd also like to be able to make friends easily. From just the websites, Gort na Coiribe and Cúirt na Coiribe seem like good choices. Living close to campus would be nice, but I wouldn't really mind a 10-15 minute walk.

Does anyone have a recommendation for me, as a foreign student with no friends in the area?

    Thanks for your help!
    -Danny

Hi dannyg. I would recommend Gort na Coiribe. When I lived there we lived with a few American students and I am still friends with them now. I have been out of Galway for a few years but I would generally recommend Gort na Coiribe. Its a really nice place to live and about 10 mins to college- all round a good place. In general gortna Coiribe will get 2nd to 3rd years as first years will be attracted to corrib village. hope that helps.

and danakin, corrib village is only for nuig students. I take it GTI is GMIT- if it is then it is the complete opposite side of galway and the best thing i would recommend is living in the city centre in a private place. but even then u will be closer to nuig. to be honest for first years i would recommend corrib village but i understand you dont want to be separated from your friend so i would ask around and maybe you could get a good house share. hope this helps

    GTI is not GMIT.
GTI is on Fr. Griffin Road.

Best bet is private accomodation/renting a house with the rest of the great unwashed.

i moved to gort na coiribe in 2nd year and it was brilliant too. a much nicer place to live- proper couches and all!!!l

Cant say i agree, at all!! I hate gort, it looks quite nice but living there is a nightmare!! I live in a house with 4 others, with one of those half sized fridges, the freezer is the little box in the fridge which is just so stupid! my brother lives in a house with 5 others with the same fridge situation.

The walls are like paper... id easily have a conversation with the person in the next room with me without raising my voice. It doesnt help when your neighbours fancy them selves as singers at 4 oclock in the morning either

I must have the smallest room in the history of the world its about 9 foot by 5 foot with a big square 3 foot box for where the stairs has to come up too.

The house was in a terribble state when we moved in, clearly no effort had been made to clean it, i mean there was still food in the presses and everything!

The houses are so prone to mould, one of my friends rooms was destroyed with mould before she even moved in, my room had small signs of it and has got progresively worse. Its the case in so many of the bedrooms.

Security is as about as useful has a choclate tea pot, as i mentioned before with my neighbours, i had an exam the next morning so i rang security and the basically told me there was nothing they could do and that it was a student village what did i expect? i expect to be able to sleep maybe?!

Our immersion broke so no hot water unless we used the boost(which is really expensive) It took them 3 weeks to fix it. And tried to claim that they never heard anything about it it a week after we complained, even though we had signed forms and everything!?

As for reception ill qoute there most recent correspondent to us:

"House inspections will be held between 10am - 5pm on tuesday ....... if someone is found still be in bed they will be givin one minute to get up and get changed and vacate the room"

    10 o'clock the day after a bank holiday?One minute!?

Proper couches... eh no, there not proper at all

EDIT: I forgot aswell the prices are rising this year too, a single room is now €100 a week instead of €90

I'm going to be a first year next year and when I visited they reccomended Gort na Coribe so I have a room there. Are there likely to be any other first years?

Also, do a lot of people smoke in the rooms?

People, take my advice, do not stay in Corrib Village. I already commented on it in a post, so I'm not up for typing the whole rant again, but trust me, the bottom line is that they're thieving b*stards.

Go there to party, not to live.
