    Hi guys,

Quick question. Before I do a complete install of Vista on my laptop I want to do a full backup of all os & program files to allow me to roll back should it all go pear shaped. The total size of the partition is about 30gigs, is it possible to back that size of a partition up and if so, what app would you recommend, Norton Ghost, MS backup????

    Thanks

    Dan

If you have it, Ghost would be a great tool for the job, assuming you have media big enough to fit it on (i.e. another hard disk/partition).

Depending on your version of Windows, using ASR (Automatic System Recovery) with MS-Backup is very good. Just start ms backup and see if you have an ASR option. You'll need a floppy disc to store the disc tables, and a medium to store your backup (external HD or such). For recovery you'll also need an XP CD. If needed you can recover in about 30 minutes.

    And its free!

Bart PE with DriveImageXML works great. I've used to this to backup and restore and never a problem plus it's free. Bart PE is mini version of XP, you need your original XP disc to create an image to burn onto a CD. DriveImageXML has plugins for BartPE, just add these before creating the image. It allows you to create a compressed backup of your drive and will ignore empty space at the end of it. Best do a Defrag of your hard disk first to minimise the size of the backup.
