Just had to ask the question as I just noticed Nikon came up with the D40x just 4 months sending out the D40. And the only real change would be 10MP instead of 8.

    Kinda sux eh?

    Seb.

The lack of its own AF motor and the status lcd really put me off the D40, so much so that I bought the older, end-of-life D50 instead.

    10MP? But but...my D70s only has 6...

Totally upgrading to a D80 when I can. What am I likely to get for a pristine condition, second hand D70s?

    "Did you buy a D40?"

I think the real question is "Did anyone worldwide buy a D40?"

    What's wrong with this camera?
I am considering one as I am only new to SLR coming from point and shoot.
Am I making the wong decision? I don't want to spend a fortune getting started

The main lacking seems to be the lack of an inbuilt drive for AF lenses meaning you are stuck with MF only except on a small number of lenses.

I dont know for a fact, but I would guess that there are fewer metering and focus sites also.

If you don't recommend this as a intro to digital SLRs what should I consider?

    Canon 400d? Pentax k10d?

Its perfect for people who want a better point and shoot.

Anyone that wants to do more than that would be better with D50/70 IMO.

I got one at Christmas and I think its great, but then again I'm a rubbish photographer at the best of times and it's the first proper SLR I've used.

I don't think anyone said it's a bad camera. Just a little limiting in terms of the lenses you can use.

eh the d40 retails for €300 LESS than the 400d,thats like comparing apples and spanners!

it's great entry price for students and teenagers just getting started,i'd still take the kit lense over the jamjar on the front of the 400D anyday

I got one, i thought the price was ok. its a beautiful camera, i only use it for bird watching.
i have to manually focus with a sigma lens from an older nikon, which doesnt really bother me as it makes me feel more predatory (part of the male gene i guess), kind of like being in a nerdy version of a 70's cop movie.

i would have prefered a 10mp camera but i have to admit that the quality of the 6 megapixel seems fine to my untrainable bad eye.

the newer version is 300 euro more, is that correct? please say it is so that I don't feel like a schmuck.

i know you guys have very exacting standards but compared to the East German manual camera I bought from an entire summer of saving back in 1989 it really is a very handsome picture taker.
