Hi i have a canon powershot a95, it doesnt support RAW

I looked on the canon site and notice that even the modern Powershots
dont seem to support RAW ?? only the SLR's seem to ??
this is strange as i heard most if not all modern digital cameras support RAW ?

And is RAW that important, I notice with my powershot i can with the manual shooting mode adjust the settings enough to my liking, but i just got the "photoshop CS2 book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby, and there is a chapter on RAW so ... I can wait for my next cam for that chap..

seems a good book aswell !!! very detailed :)

Scott Kelby is very good alright. Does a great PS podcast too called PhotoshopTV.

As far as I know RAW is only available on dSLRs but there's no reason a camera like a powershot cannot support it. All digiocams effectively take RAW files and then convert them to JPEG (a dSLR just also writes the unprocessed sensor data to a .cr2 file as well) The powershot also uses the same image processor as the 350D for example so there's not a huge difference electronics wise.

RAW isn't the be all and end all but its nice to be able to mess with an uncompressed image where things like white balance are still in a "liquid" state.

Some of the G-series by Canon support RAW. You need not necessarily have to splash out on an dslr, although I think they are dropping Raw support from the newer ones so you may well have to go the slr route.

Its probably assumed that if you're not investing in an SLR then you probably don't know what RAW is, let alone would require it.

Which is, in fairness, probably true in the vast majority of cases.

Well I think i may invest in a Canon EOS model, not just for the RAW ,
mainly for the lenses and much greater flexibility and control..

Not to start a debate or anything, (I do own a Canon 350D that I love) but don't forget about Nikon!

Nikon is the best camera brand around to be honest. Even Canon made an official announcement in 2003 that Nikon was clearly superior.*

    *may not be true.

The old battle is never going to end.. well, who knows, in a few decades, one may buy the other one and that would be the end of the debate !:D
5uspect, what's that podcast you are talking about? Can you give the link ?

Personally, i find Raw is slowing down the editing process unless lots of adjustements need to be done.
I have a Nikon d50 and i actually use Nikon's software to edit my Raws as i m not quite happy with what i get in CS2. What are you guys using?
