Personally, I reckon he's one of the professional drivers working for the company they hire the track from. There may even have been a couple of Stigs during the tenure.

    That or it's Chris Evans.

That's the Old Stig in the black suit.

The new Stig - I'm leaning towards Nigel Mansell, clue in the episode where Mansell was the star in the reasonably priced car, and drove the same lines as the Stig, and in the same time too. (or thereabouts, I think)

So far, jenson button, tiff nedell, jason plato and the current is nigel mansel, the fat gut gives it away.

I think the simple answer is that a number of racing drivers are used depending on availabilty and filming schedules. I believe Ben Collins has been the Stig before, if one were to throw another name about.

Its Ben Collins , he also done F1 testing.

Ben Collins 'outed' as The Stig

Appearing on a New Zealand Motorsport television programme called 'Pit Lane' on January 17th 2007, A1GP team manager and British motorsport personality David Sears was questioned if he knew the identity of the Top Gear test driver known only as "The Stig". Without hesitiation and in a very matter-of-fact manner he replied, "Oh, you want to know who the Stig is... Ben Collins, he's a British sportscar driver, Ben Collins".

Perry McCarthy was the first stig according to Wikipedia

Everyone can guess all the want but until we have definate confirmation i still think that it is actually JC, and that he isn't really that tall in really life. They just give him very high shoes to throw us off!

I'd go with it being Ben Collins too, he has done things for top gear in non-stig form too

I reckon its johnny vegas and that terrible lap where he was braking with his right foot was all just a clever cover-up! :p

Well apparently, in this video, the Stig talks. It's a behind-the-scenes Dutch television interview with some of the TG team.

I wonder is that really the Stig talking?

Would having different drivers every week not wreck the whole standardised testing of cars idea that the stig was created for?

I reckon he was smelted in the fires of Ferraris Maranello factory from old knackered 250 GT's.

Its hardly standardised, seeing as conditions can vary

Mk 1 Stig was Perry McCarthy.
Mk 2 Stig is shared between Julian Bailey and Ben Collins.

    Don't ask how I know...

We've had that idea for a while now too. I don't think I want to know who he is though :)
