Do you want to hear the list of stuff that needs to be fixed
on that photo?

Can your camera do bracketing?

Yes i want to hear all issues , the main problem i see is the lack of sharpness/clarity due to camera being hand held balanced on the tripod .

What is bracketing ?

Horizon is slanted, loads of noise, camera shake is obvious and the exposure is all wrong. Perhaps try again with the tripod? :)

Bracketing is when your camera takes 3 photos.

1 underexposed
1 normal
1 overexposed.

In your case you would combine the underexposed image
with the normal image so that you would get detail in the
moon.

Basically a HDR but only a portion of the photo.
Have a look at the HDR tutorial in "Digital Darkroom".

If there isn't enough info there I have a few images where
I have bracketed moon shots that I could put up to show ya.

sure .. but my patience with photography may wane

Well your camera has Bracketing:

" Auto bracketing: Selectable from 1/3 EV, 2/3 EV and 1 EV steps, 5 images"

and it also has spot metering:

"
Metering System Digital ESP, Multi-Pattern, Spot"

So

Do a 5 image bracketed shot in 1EV steps.
Switch metering to Spot and aim the spot at the moon
so that it is metered correctly.

Then combine your photos either manually with layers or use photomatrix
if you want either.

All of this with a tripod and use the timer to take the photo.

Then have a look at the result?

it's a disappointing photograph, but without a tripod it's always going to be a challenge to get a decent shot and you have to take your shots from a tripod for bracketing so that you get exactly the same scene. Trying to hold the camera dead steady for one second is very difficult,

and as far as the patience is concerned; i understand the frustration, I cant remember how many photographs i've taken with the wrong ISO, lens, aperture, exposure etc. it does dent one's confidence somewhat.

Take a break from that kind of shot and concentrate on something else then when your ready come back to it again. I suppose we can all learn by our failures, like - you'll ensure next time, that you have all your equipment

good luck!

:)

i actually had been on a bender over the weekend -- so maybe there is proof that alcohol and photography don't mix good.

ffs baz, your atitute is unacceptable.

you have to learn from your mistakes.

yes the photo is ****e but you have been given
multiple methods to improve it.

the moon will rise again and then you will be ready with your tripod to capture the scene.

get the **** out there.

Why is my attitude unacceptable !!
i admit photo is ****e , so whats unreasonable about that , do you want me to defend a phot i don't like now ... i regret posting it here , i regret taking it , i regret not having a working tripod, but dont call it ****e and then question my attitude.

Whoah...chill little forumites...breathe.

Baz, he meant that there's no point in getting all upset about photography just because of one crap shot. It was a nice idea and I can see the lovely photo it could have been if you had been more lucky/careful.

The point is, try again. The best photographers in the world have a huge trail of awful, terrible, failed photos behind them. Take more shots, and learn from your previous mistakes.

The lesson you should take from this debaucle is that taking photographs in dark situations is really really hard and needs to be done very carefully. Bet you won't forget that one soon :)

EDIT: And learn to curse properly you asterix using fuckers :p

No i accept the criticism , cause i did ask for it , but from begining i said i was angry (with myself) for not having tripod adaptor , so i just put up what i thought would have been a nice photo , but was ruined by lack of tripod .
In hindsight, i shouldn't have posted it here for c & c , and i genuinly appreciate constuctive crticisim positive and negative , but i did get annoyed when my attitude was questioned , after photo was slated as ****e .
But i repeat i do not mind negative criticism, as it might help me improve.

hehe,

Sorry baz,

Re Reading the post this morning it looks bad.

Basically I typed exactly what I would have said if I was
talking to you in person and if you saw my face when i said it
you wouldn't have been angry.

Imagine reading the post as if it is one of protest??

It always happens on every forum that the emmotion of a post
is lost through text.

I didn't use the astrix thingy's cos I didn't want you to think that
I was being really serious.

I dont really know how to explain but I absolutely am not a Shrimp.
(you know what I mean:))

Bascially look at all my posts in this thread, I busted my ass trying
to motivate you, and in every reply you humm and haaa.

So I made a little "cattle prod" post and then look at your reply,
you are all excited.

I think I had drank a nice amount wine by that time last night, dont
completely remember but I still would have felt the same (probably...).:o

But 1 thing I request is that you try to take a similar photo again
the next time there is a moon and apply all the stuff that we said
to you and we will compare them side by side.
Then you will feel great and that is all the motivation you need to
get the fcuk out there and take more pictures.

apology accepted -- and i do appreciate the advice as thats what i need -- i still havn't deleted it from my flickr -- as i can monitor my progress as a photographer from it -- as stated i had been on an ufamiliar boozy weekend , and i don't think that helped , i.e. forgetting equipment -- i think the main jist of my post was that i was pissed with myself for ruining a good opportunity, they looked grand on the LCD , then when i loaded on to pc ... major let down -- should have stayed in the pub.

over 200 people have viewed this photo in flickr --my record hit count --- i'll have to hang my head in shame --- maybe its been used as an example of how not to shoot a full moon -- don't think i'll make the photoshop day in shame --- anyway I don't think expert ps skills could have resurrected this poor photo anyway :p
