    I have 2 Gig Ram. (1GB Ballastix and 1GB Geil PC3200 UltraX-BH5)

I know there not a great match but it's actually slower now than it was frown.gif

I have the ballistic in slot 1 & 2 and Geil in 3 & 4, if I reverse them the pc won't start.. Anything I can do??

    Here's my Vista score card.

    Cpu? Motherboard?

    What type of Ballastix ram?

Either way, Bh5 ram likes high volts and the Ballastix ram is more than likely TCCD which likes low volts. And you can't volt both sets of chips independently. So I would say thats where your problem is coming from.

Also Amd64 systems always like their ram timings in T1, but with 4 sticks in it defaults to T2 and shows a noticeable performance decrease in real world use. The newer Am2 chips don't see this problem to the same degree.

    Hi Krazy,
    It's Ballastix 1GB kit (512MBx2) DDR PC3200 • 2-2-2-6 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.8V • 64Meg x 64

    Mobo is a Giga-Byte GA-K8N Pro-SLI System
    CPU is
2.30 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core.

I couldn't get another gig of matching Geil Ram, they are not doing it anymore and I mailed Geil tech support who offered no advice so I lost the head and bought the ballastix in temper :-)
If you think there's anything I can do will you explain it to me like the fool I am, thanks.

some motherboards expect the matching pairs to be in slots 1 & 3 and 2 & 4.

Cool, will try that tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

It is not just that the ram drops to T2, but the memory controller for DDR and AMD's does not handle 4 slots of ram at DDR400

It drops the mem speed down to DDR333, this is why the score is lower. Sadly there is nothing you can do about this, its a limit of the memory controller which is interated into the CPU so can't just be replaced.

I had a similar decission to make about using 1gb (2slots) or 3gb(4slots) of ram, but in the end the speed hit from filling 4 slots and taking a performance hit was not worth it. I even overclocked the CPU so that it brought the ram up to DDR400 but there was still a noticable performace hit. I've back using 1gb overclocked. Will move to the 2gb pair if i find games really need it.
