    Hi All
I changed jobs and career path about 4 months ago, i have only graduated from college about 2 years now. I moved jobs but i have not yet been given any work to do, i am continously asking for work and i have raised my concerns about this to the stage that i just feel like im naging my manager. I have been given plenty of documents to read, but as you can imagine i am getting extremly bored of reading documents from 9 to 5.30 everyday.

I am aware it takes time to settle into a new position but my question is how long would you stay and wait for work? From various team meeting i get the immpession that i wont be getting work for a while if at all.
The thing that annoys me the most is that I left my previous job because i was bored from the lack of work coming my way.infact i wasted about 1year and half doing no work at all.
My current job is the career title(if i got some work to do in that area) i want and it pays well but i am bored to tears and dread getting up for work each day.
Would i be crazy to move jobs again?(i would probably have to take a pay cut but i don't mind if it means i get some relevant experience and work)
Am i just wasting my time with this company?
I dont want to see myself 3 years out of college and still having no experience.

If any one has some advice or opinions on my situation I would like to hear them.

    Thank you in advance

< i wasted about 1year and half doing no work at all./>

<i am continously asking for work/>

<I have been given plenty of documents to read/>,

i am wondering is this for real: every one I know is snowed with work.

In relation to <I have been given plenty of documents to read/> what do you do when you have read the documents? There must be some feedback required by you. perhaps you need to show some initative before you get found out.

Finally, on ,<my current job is the career title i want /> I am blown away

once i have read the documents that were provided to me i constantly ask for some work, only to be given a bigger document to read. I ask questions if i dont understand something and I show an interest in the work that other members of my team are doing,
My manger has on numerous occasions apologized for the lack of work there is and says she is too busy to train me in. I think i have shown plently of initiative, i have even asked if I could help out another team until she found time to train me in or until she found work for me to do.. but nothing has happened with that either
What i meant about "my current job is the career title i want" i meant that the job i applied for and the job spec is the career path i want to presue my career in..
I forgot to mention there is another team member that started around the same time as me, also is sitting idle reading documents.

Am i wasting my time in this job?

Sounds like a cushy number you have there OP, but i can see where you're coming from. You could stay on and lose out on experience for a while and see if you're taken seriously and given work&experience or you could move on. I'd go with the first option, for a while anyway.

It's a cushy number but has little opportunity for the OP to develop their skills, take on interesting work and / or change careers into something else later on.

Who wants to work in a job where they are bored stupid - thats depressing.

Look into one of those fancy development plans with your manager. This might bind them to training you or risk having it highlighted when it comes round to reviews and so on.

Failing that escalate it or start talking to other teams in the same area to take on work there.

Is it something you could potentially train yourself on or offer low level support to your team mates?

If the opportunities you want arent presenting themselves you are ultimitley responsible for resolving them - be it leaving for a more interesting job or hounding your boss.

Last place I worked was manically busy - my manager promised the moon and sun to me. They were gonna try and fit it into there 16 hour day. Didn't happen so I was on there back daily reminding them of the commitments.

If your manager is eager to teach you but just doesnt have the time they wont mind this so much. If they were just making hte promises in the first place to keep you out of the way you'll probably find out after they screm at you :D

    Be Persistent!

Im in a similar situation and have decided that I will give it 6 months which I think is a decent enough time for them to train me properly. if Im still in the situation that I am bored to tears, I will then look for a new job.

I appreciate the fact that everyone thinks this is a cushy problem to have but in reality, if you're not learning anything in a job then you really dont have many chances for progression and you will stay stagnant. Thats why Ive given 6 months......maybe you should set yourself a similar goal OP.

I am in the same boat as you. I was made redundant from a good job in Jan, and have now found myself in a job that bears almost no resemblance to the job spec or what I was told in the interview - basically have gone from doing mostly sysadmin stuff to just answering the phone and logging calls all day. As you can well understand, very fscking frustrating to be in this situation!

I would ask for a meeting with your manager and be truthful, ask him for a 3 month plan of action, set goals. If he can't do that, then I would leave the job. It's YOUR career, don't feel obligated to stay in a job that is holding you back and making you feel miserable

I am in the exact same situation as well, finished my Master's in September and went straight into current job which sounded really iunteresting and related to the courses I did in college. I am here 5 and a half months now, work is seriously boring, the work I do is very admin, not at all like the position that was described to me at the interview. The conditions are unbeatable, good money, frequent pay rises, great bonus, flexitime, cheap canteen, the list goes on. The people are nice as well, but the work is boring and I am not learning anything. I have done a few interviews and am awaiting to hear back from one which I think I got. It sounds great to have a handy job from the outside, but the longer I stay here, the harder it will get to leave, and then when I do eventually want to leave, I will have gained no relevant experience so no one will employ me. I kinda have to get out of here soon
