By default all the startup stuff happens one after the other in XP, some scripts have a timeout of up to 10 minutes

You can tweak stuff in gpedit.msc to allow all scripts to run at the same time and shorten timeouts.

Scripts would include patches that require restarts and stuff recently installed and system restore and whatever else XP decides to try and "fix" as well as any logon scripts and startup stuff

msconfig.msc will list what starts up
    I prefer autoruns myself though
