Running Mac laptop without battery

    Hi,

I sometimes take the battery out of my MacBook and run it by plugging in the power so it runs directly from the mains. I do it to save battery

Just wondering if anyone else does it. Would it make the battery last longer if I do that rather than let the battery charge while using it? Would it damage the laptop in any way?

The battery will stop charging automatically once it is full, so it won't damage the battery. However, you may be able to slightly increase the lifetime of your battery by removing it when running off mains for extended periods.

I don't think the difference is significant enough to bother with the inconvenience, besides you can always buy a new battery in a year or two. I recommend fastmac.com for new MacBook and MacBook Pro batteries. Great prices and they ship to Ireland no bother.

Thanks. I'd only do it when I know I'll be using it for a long time and it's going to be on a desk. But I guess if it doesn't help the battery in the long run that much then maybe it's not worth it...

If you are taking the battery out, leave it charged at about 40%. Keeping it constantly high or low is bad for the cells.
