Caught a glimpse of the report on RTÉ2 news last night. Thought brand on box looked like Humax.

The report is here but picture quality isn't great.

I've tried to screengrab the images from the realplayer video for comparison purposes but can't do so correctly, so you'll have to judge for yourselves. Anyway looking at the front facia, the remote layout and more importantly the menu layout, the box appears to be a Humax HDCI-2000T.

EDIT: Need not have bothered. Already confirmed on 'Glass half full' thread

Ah, still worth the bother, as some might not think of looking in that thread to find out what equipment was used.

I like the menu's (well from the images)!

Good to see that they're using equipment capable of mpeg 4 and HD from the start.

    More by "accident" I suspect.

Doesnt seem like by accident although I can understand your thinking knowing the country...

Yes. but are they doing this/ announcing it BECAUSE they have realised what the trial boxes do, or was this the plan when they started planning in 2005?

I know it's usual here to rubbish the trial and, by extension, the people behind it, but would it ever occur to ye that the enthusiasts who post here are not the only ones in the country familiar with this kind of kit or it's capabilities ? Do you really think that the equipment etc is chosen at random ?

I'll be happy to see a HD trial here, enjoying the quality (albeit limited programming) of the current BBC trial. It will be interesting to see what kind of material they'll be able to source.

The reason that there is a certain degree of sceptisim is that if our Goverment was good at joined up thinking we would have an Irish Satellite Platform and DTT maybe 5 or 6 years ago, true flatrate 24x7 diaup universial and near 100% broadband.

However there is some hope as they seem to have discovered how to make roads after 80 years and do it on time and on budget.

Also there simply is not the spectrum for HD services till analogue is closed. Each HD channel eats the spectrum of 4 to 6 regular channels. (or 10 poorer quality channels)

Seems to be no scart or SVideo outputs on those boxes?

I guess they got it right as HD Tests are part of the trial!

If that model number is right, then its the same model the BBC used for its digital tests (and they do have scart connections). Pictures and reviews of the HDCI 2000T as apart of the BBCs HD Trial are at the thread below.

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352183

The connections at the back are

    1. Antenna In
    2. Loop Out
    3. USB host
    4. TV Scart
    5. VCR Scart
    6. Audio L/R
    7. Video
    8. HDMI
    9.RS-232C
    10.S/PDIF
    11. On/Off

OK, but which would Paddy Irishman prefer - 10 crap channels or 1 HD channel? If Paddy gets a real choice, I suspect he/she would gladly sacrifice quantity for quality. I acknowledge that HD could still be crap content, but it seems a worthwhile question to ask.

i would happily be willing to sacrifice crap channels for one HD channel with decent content

Of all the people ,family and friends, I've mentioned this to only one has been anyway interested in HD.

The main point of interest to them has been the fact that with DTT it would be possible to pick up the BBC's and ITV with as little as a rabbit's ear aeriel (in this part of the city)

That's presuming that BBC's and ITV will be carried on Irish DTT! If they are to be carried, I personally think it's unlikely they'll be available free.

I don't believe they'll be free , since the BBC and ITV would want payment ,but what route the Government will go to allow that funding

Whether they will go directly into pay channels after the current 4 channels and possible 1 or 2 extra RTE/TV3 channels or add on something to the licence fee to have a basic level of 10 "free" channels

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

The payment is small. IMO without free UK TV the DTT is nearly dead in terms of getting people to change over without arresting them for having an analogue only TV tuner.

    Yes so would I.

But would the RTE create a single good HD channel? If there was a single HD channel no-one else would get it.

Even amongst potential good RTE programs how many need 50" HDTV and how many OK on a 7" QVGA screen?

Well I guess there's the potential to source content from a fairly big pool in the US and here in Europe - the licensing issue for accessing the material could probably be difficult, for instance, with Discovery HD material already bought by SKY for their platform - I imagine that the terms of their contract with the provider of the content grants them exclusive rights whch would prevent the provider seling it also to the Government or anyone else for a FTA trial, similar difficulties would arise with any other content where SKY or any other operator has already paid for exclusive rights. But there is a fairly big pool of material It would be interesting to see what the situation might be with sourcing material from HD1, although that tends to be music concerts, travelogues and fringe sports.

According to stuff i've heard elsewhere, BBC have been recording stuff in HD from sometime, meaning they have a back-catalogue of material - I assume that they're holding this in abeyance both as a commercial advantage for sales in other markets and in advance of a full HD roll-out in the UK.
