just looking for guide price on stairs. Went out last week for a look and am awaiting a couple of quotations from joinery shops. Its 4 risers to a 3 riser turn and then 8 risers to top. Bottom flight will have one side a cut string and other side a closed string. Turn and top flight wil be both closed string. We have requested quotes for Red Deal, Ash and Oak. Anyone get similar lately and give me a ball park. Also one of the joinery shops has given me another option.... laminate oak, have to say it doesnt look bad at all, much better than Red Deal.

    thanks

    Hi Secman,

I don't know much about stairs but one thing I have discovered about red deal is that it is horribly soft and likely a bad choice for stairs ! I have red deal flooring upstairs in my current house and even with industrial standard varnish almost anything such as a ladder or a chair will put a dent in it.

It will be the cheap option but for stairs I would recommend at least teak or some other hardwood.

Red Deal won't be seen in my new build on the floors or doors !

I would be interested in the quotes you get, if you have no objection could you post them or pm them to me ?

    best regards, p.

If you get a laminate I would recommend asking about long term wear, you may need to put carpet over it.

Just got one quote back: Options

    Red Deal €2,890
    Ash €3,540
    Oak €4,340

All plus VAT @ 13.5% to include supply and fitting

On the laminate one (no price yet) , this is made totally of oak, no other wood is used. Apparently it is blocks of oak offcuts and is machine pressed and glued together. It comes in large sheets and when you look at it front, back and side profile it is all oak. Never saw it before and it does look different.

That Oak option sounds interesting. Its worth paying extra for stairs to get something that looks good and is well made. Northing worse than stairs that speak to you each time you use them.

I know this, I have creaky teak stairs and a 1 year old who like to wake early !!! arrgghhh !!!

Stairs are quiet complex to make if you have not made a lot of them before. I have made about 15 sets of stairs and there is a lot of hidden tricks to making them than seems apparent. It's definetly not a project to be taking on for the first time if you have never made stairs before.

You'v a huge host of things to consider when constructing them and putting them together. Jigs and a router will be essential in making them also a morticing machine.

I believe that the self build part is everything else but the stairs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

I hope so cause them stairs will not be very good if there without the proper knowledge and required skills

Your stair prices are very reasonable, I've seen quotes for oak stairs similar spec, over 10k.

Self build stairs is not a self build option in the conventional sense, although there are now kits available for such.............blasphemy indeed:D :D

Believe me , I have no intention of trying to do stairs myself, had a nightmare last night, someone left a hammer in my house !

Still waiting for other quotes, but we are very happy with the one we have received as that was the workshop that impressed us most with the quality of their work.

    .

That seems reasonable. Quoted recently for similar stairs in Oak around the 5k mark for joiner in Wexford. Ask (if you can) to see one of his stairs fitted so you can assess for yourself if you would be happy with the workmanship.

I'm looking at stairs at the minute too (got a scary 13k quote last week), and I know exactly what I want - painted risers with waxed/varnished hardwood treads. So the wood used in the risers isn't important, red deal would be fine. Would definitely need hardwood treads though, for durability.
Does anyone know if it's possible to combine hardwood treads and softwood risers in a staircase? Or is there some joinery reason that this can't be done? Anything to keep the cost down!

Maybe you could open a thread on this point in the Woodwork forum

am in a similar position to you, looking for a curved oak staircase. Our staircase will turn through 180 degrees, and will be freestanding. Got a quote from www.stairworld.com for about €15,000 delivered. Will be cheaper if stairs is supported by wall. Had been told by an Irish manufacturer that such a staircase would start at €25,000 !

Just an update on the stairs and a few pics. Delighted with them.

They are a nice job. I believe Andrew Roche joinery in Wexford done those.

    Secman,

Apologies for changing the topic slightly but notice in your pics that you have what look to be oak doors hanging with what appears to be read deal frames/architrave. Currently selecting doors for a new build and like oak doors but dont like the price of skirting/architrave (about 600m of it). How are you planning to finish the woodwork?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,619 ✭✭✭secman

We are using red deal as you correctly stated and are painting them white. In a way it frames the oak doors and they stand out more. We did have a good look around and mulled over it for a long time .We went to show houses and have seen the oak frames and architraves and in the end we thought that the contrast of the white frame made the doors stand out more. Bonus is that its a lot cheaper too. Its all to do with personal taste though, someone else will hate it !

    hi there

Secman, would you mind sending me the name of the company you used or anyone else who would think they got a good quote for stairs.
Mine is unusual in that it goes up the middle and then goes left and right. Getting quotes for 20K to have it done in OAK. any help would really be appreciated.

    Thanks

Secman those stairs look great. Dont suppose the joiner is in or near Laois?

On a separate trivial note whats the difference between a Joiner and carpenter. Excuse the ignorance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,619 ✭✭✭secman

Andy Roche Joinery of Blackwater, Co Wexford, no where near Laois ! With the down turn in the building, not sure how far he will travel to measure and fit ? Worth a try though.
